It looks like SORN renewal is back by the backdoor
On return from holiday I recievied a SORN reminder from the DLVA for one of our vehicles that was a Cat C write off almost 5 years ago, the vehicle
in question was SORNED before transfer to the insurance company and all documentation was correctly completed.
Of course the DVLA being the DVLA encourage you to update their records via the net, but this is impossible without the registration document.

the gov.uk version is still that it doesn't need renewed
quote: Your SORN is automatically cancelled when you tax your vehicle again or it’s sold, scrapped or permanently exported.
You don’t need to do renew a SORN.
probably just a screw-up in the automatic system that could have been triggered by a change of owner or scraping it...
if you don't own it then its nowt to do with you, but it might be worth a call to stop them send you any more reminders / fines and save
yourself from those arguments later

Probably someone trying to get it back on the road?
Check the registration on the DVLA site to see what it says

BT...
My experience with the DVLA comes down to writing letters and sending them by registered post. Phone calls to them seem ineffective, but letters
don't seem to get ignored. It also doesn't hurt to include photocopies of any supporting documents with your letter and to list them in
your letter. It goes without saying that you should keep copies of any written communication to/from the DVLA as well as a diary of any phone
conversations (name, telephone number, department, discussions etc.).

if it were sorn 5 years ago, then that would have run out a year later.
unlike now, where sorn stays unless you change owners etc.
