Webber Carbs and Emissions for SVA

My donor sierra was first registered on 11-02-1992.

My car has just failed the SVA for the second time for emissions.

Please could someone give me the exact criteria for this engine, that they look for at the SVA test.

40 quid for the carb setting up
30 quid plus vat for hire of a trailer
30 quid for the re-test.

100 quid and it's still failed again. Doing my head in to say the least.

Bad luck mate

Was it set up with an exhaust gas analyser? I would take it back to whoever set it up and complain

This shouldn't be too difficult I would have thought

Cheers

Mark

Thanks M8. I've done that and it will be going back some time this week. He just needs to know exactly the criteria for that engine and what the SVA test for. Then he can set up the webbers for that.

Wind the idle mixture in until it starts to backfire or "pop" through the carbs. Should be lean enough to get through the 3.5% CO and 1200 HC limits (if that is what they are using, my 94 zetec was tested at these). When you get round the corner from the SVA you could if you were really naughty turn it back up again.

Are you getting tested at Beverly by any chance? If so I might be able to help.

Where did you have the carbs setup?

Hi Mate.

Yes I'm having the test done at Beverly. Why do you ask that?

I had the carbs setup by Alan at the Batley Performance Centre (BPC it's now called)

He said he can look at them some time next week.... next week....

I think the testing machine is a bit keen shall we say at Beverly, I failed on emmissions only first time and had also had them set up first.

How long had the car been running before it was tested? I know this is a strange question but here's what happened to me.

At re-test drove the car there (in the pissing rain), the guy called me straight in as it was raining soo much and stuck the testing gizmo up the exhaust. He then told me it had failed! I had actually had the car tested again on the way to the test by the guy who set them up, so I knew it was right. So I told the guy the story (very nicely). He then asked if I had some dry clothes to change into and told me to go and get a drink, he would be back in about 15 mins.

Anyway, when I returned to the car he had started it, and was just testing it. He then said, "There you go, its passed". I could have kissed him. He then told me that he has found this to be the best way to test twin carbs, he thought they get a bit richer when they get hot. I didn't care really as it had passed.

It had also stopped raining, I get it registered on the way home, and had fun on the way back also.

Hope that long winded post might help a bit.

Cheers
