I need MOT. DVLA have spoken!

From a letter from DVLA Ipswich....

(Quote)..........I acknowledge your chassis number BEEDLE19612005JSB and confirm this is correct and accepted by the agency. I also wish to say that as the vehicle is to be plated as a 'Q' the vehicle will need an MOT......(quote).

Well there you have it. I think they're wrong!
Comments please.
Cheers
Jon

Jon,

If that letter's from Mr Feest (Feast?) then he's wrong - I did an MOT because it suited me to do it, despite what he said, but later on I found out that I didn't need one.

If you do a computerised MOT you'll be asked for an MOT at your next tax renewal... guess how I know...

David

The letter is from Jo Langridge at DVLA Ipswich. I had already 'phoned Swansea and they were completely clueless and so were the people at VOSA
I don't know who to go to to sort this out!
I think I might just give in and get an MOT. At least that way I can give my car a run on the road before the SVA...that's if I can get insurance without a reg number. It will also be cheaper than hiring a trailer and finding a disused airfield! I'm trying to get insurance now. It seems they'll only cover me for a few days! What a load of red tape...it's all b......ks!

John,

I would ring Swansea back and tell them that many others have been through the same process and didn't require an MOT. If they still argue the point then ask to speak to the supervisor.

I insured mine with Adrian Flux and gave them a bell before taking it for a pre booked MOT and they said that's fine (I got them to do the MOT test but not put it on the system, they called it a general inspection!). This gave me a chance to test drive the car and test the speedo etc.

You could get an MOT but why should you! and also every year you will then need one and won't get the first three years without one.

I would def ring Swansea again mate.

Rich.

They even said they would put that in writing! So there you have it. I don't think they have a clue personally!

You dont need an MOT and cant get an MOT becuase you dont have a registration number/plate allocated to your build.

You will be able to get insurance to enable you to legally drive your car on the public highway based on your chassis number but this insurance will probably only be valid for 2 weeks/ a month max. This 2/4 weeks should be enough time to SVA, retest if needed & register your vehicle once youve got your ministers approval certificate.

Even when the vehicle has passed its SVA & youve got your MAC certificate and handed it over to DVLA it wont need an MOT for the 1st 3 years as its a 2006 built car and new cars dont need MOT's for the first 3 years.

The people you have spoken to at DVLA & the people that have written to you from DVLA are WRONG.

it was my local DVLA (Stockton) Kit car registration expert lady who told me that you definitely without doubt do not need an MOT for 3 years. She is extremely knowledgable and was adament that she was right (somehow she pre-empted my question before i even finished my sentance!.

She is called Kelly - 01642796611. She might be able to advise you who to talk to at Swansea.

HTH,
Darren.

But the problem is that how does the MOT station know what emissions test to do then??

Reg document confirms what emissions test is required, and as you don't have one yet how can they do it!!??

You dont need an mot, but... because even Dvla and vosa aren't sure, I thought it best to get one, cus if I did ever get into a serious accident and mr. magistrates saw that I had no mot on my custom build, what would HE do?.. for the sake of £40 you might aswell get one.#

edit: they didnt do an emissions test on mine, the mechanic said the car probably wasn't in the vosa database yet.

We had a pre-SVA MOT purely as a check that everything was kind of sorted. He did an emissions test but as he didn't have anything to verify it against - it would have failed on that point.

Just my 2p...

I also went the 'general inspection' MOT, that is, not recorded, before SVA.
How the registration process was explained to me back in 2004, was that the car would have a '1st registration', that means that it would be 3 years from the date of first registration that it would require its first (official) MOT. I have indeed re taxed my car since the SVA/first registration and no MOT was asked for.

Me too. I booked mine in for an MOT but without the end paperwork so that I could have a professional mechanic cast his eye over the vehicle before I presented her for SVA.

Hmmm, well we had an MOT test done on our Locost before SVA. Purely for peace of mind as it was a long drive to the SVA test.
It had no plates (obviously) but had a chassis number.
It passed and we were issued with a full 12 month MOT.

This was before the computerised test, so although we had an MOT, we don't need to renew it for the first 3 years.

Dunno about emmisions, it wasn't mentioned IIRC..
