Another "good" fail at Chelmsford

Had a brilliant day on my SVA at Chelmsford.
Failed on the following:
Alternator wire too close to steering down link and not secured. (didn't notice that one)
No.plate light wire not secured (bugger I new that needed doing and forgot)
ECU doesn't have min radius of curvature of 2.5mm. (easy fix)
Rear fog light not quite vertical (my inspector was prepared to let this one go but one of his colleagues said it was technically a fail)
One for Hellfire here!!!
Headlight pattern fail.
(Although he was happy that they would not dazzle oncoming drivers because I had twisted the lense. The horizontal part of the beam wasn't horizontal therfore the lights would not illuminate the road to an acceptable level.) (The annoying part of this is that at least 3 cars have passed at Gillingham test centre using these headlights)
Re-test booked for MondaY at 8:00am
Drove downd the A12 on the way there
Back via the twisties
Mick my tester was absolutely brilliant.
Very complimentary and a thorouly nice bloke.
What I was most pleased with was the emmissions.
I was convinced I was going to fail emmissions.
I was still tuning the map at 10:00pm the night before.

What was very interesting about the test was something I found out regarding the floor line!!!
If you have bike style indicators on stalks then they effectively "mask" the suspension components. They raise the effective floor line above the level of most if not all of the wishbones and springs/shocks
Therefore the radius of curvature rules don't apply

Hopefully on the road by next w-end.

Good one... As I said, I had a good experience at Chelmsford despite failing.

Brakes now sorted, Mirrors doing tomorrow, need to take out on the road and put down some marks to test the field of view. Wont fail on that next time.

Making up some extension bars for the indicators should be done soon.

Then its test time again..

Welll done.. Its not that bad, at least you know what needs to be done now.

I clipped up the loose wires this evening and picked up a pair of headlights to fit tomorrow.
Just got the fog light and ECU to sort over the w-end and I'm ready for Monday morning

regarding the indicagtors the mnr SVA ones follow this route. Would like to take all the credit but DAX came up with the idea first. The indicator bar is basicaly clasified as a bumper.

I think the have to be securly fastened ( top wishbown bracket is good ).

think there are some photoes somewhere

I was chatting to a Dax owner this week who had passed on Tuesday and i noticed this on his car, none of the front suspension was radiused or covered! Just the indicator lighting bar around the front!
Looking at his car also made me realise what a difference it makes when you go to SVA with a 'Brand name'! I'm sure his Dax wouldn't have passed if it was called a Locost instead. His steering wheel for exmple, no way it was SVA friendly but he passed with it on! And the instruments in the dash, they all protruded un-radiused. The cycle wings weren't aligned correctly either. Maybe i'll buy a Dax badge for my test!

Is the indicator bar a feasable option or is it still best to spend a few minutes covering the corners of the suspension parts?

If you fit indicators on stalks or an indicator bar "Dax style" then you do not need to worry about the minimum radius on the suspension components. It raises the effective floor line above the suspension. It's madness but it's true.
At SVA they use a conical thing on rollers that they wheel up to your car. If the indicator stalks are the first thing to hit this cone then they become the floor line in that area and anything below them or behind them are exempt from the 2.5mm minimum radius rule.
The inspector actually asked me why I had bothered to coversuspension parts.
