Hi
Anyone know what I will need to identify the car to get it MOTd prior to SVA?
Do I just make up a chassis number?
Thanks

I made up chassis number but had it confirmed by DVLA first (sent them a letter to enquire about build up inspection and if i could use my number).
Most people advise only getting an unofficial MOT - ie dont let them enter your cars details on the computer. You wont get a certificate (not needed)
but additionally you will benefit from no MOT for 3 years after registration.
I didnt bother with MOT. Just had headlamp and emissions checked.

Is it still legal to drive to the appointment if not actually getting an MOT?

As long as you have insurance and a pre-arranged appointment it is perfectly legal. You will be booking in for an MOT, the only bit that you dont want
to happen is the issuing of a certificate and entering your cars details on the computer.
Driving to SVA after making an appointment is also perfectly legal, take your letter with you for proof just in case. I have heard that some Police
Forces like you to display chassis number where reg plates go so that they can do a check without stopping you - i didnt do this. I did see some
Police en-route but they didnt stop me.
I have also been told that you can drive to a garage to have pre-MOT / SVA work done as long as you make an appointment first.
You will need to be insured, to get this you will need chassis number. Most insurance companies give you 2 weeks to supply them with reg number. i
arranged my insurance the day before SVA. Went straight to garage for emissions and headlamp alignment check (chassis number was entered into the
appointments book). Next day failed SVA. Retest 6 days later. Passed and dropped forms off at DVLA (inspection already carried out at home). they
phoned the reg number thro to me (i asked for this) and i managed to sort insurance reg number out on the last day. So it is all possible.
Ref DVLA i recommend writing to your local office. Ask about the forms and if home visit is possible. Also propose a chassis number. I got a call the
next day, home appointment arranged and she brought the forms out to me and explained how to complete. The only thing she did say was that if the car
was capable of being driven she wouldnt have come out. The car does not have to be completed, it just has to resemble a car and be identifable.
Sorry for extra data - hope it helps.

You should give the same chassis no. that you have given or will be giving on your SVA forms & this should be Permanently marked on the
vehicle.
