chassis number
Well hello again.
Can any one tell me what to use for a chassis number , i have no donor car details so i cant take the chassis number of that. being told i need a
chassis number for s.v.a test but where do i get it from.

Well the guy at VOSA who did my SVA in Notts said just make it up, so i did. Think its got to be longer than 8/9 characters and less than 17? But dont
quote me.
Mine was this: MK1NDY2006CHAZ
Honestly i thought he was joking at the time when he said i can put my name on it. I just punched that into an aluminium plate and riveted that to the
chassis, and jobs a goodun'!

do you need to punch it into the chassis as well or is the ali plate rivited good enuf

Some local DVLA offices will let you choose your own number, some will not.It may be worth writing to your local office with your intended number and
see if they are happy with it it.

I Had a chat with my local dval office the other day(Ipswich). The woman there said they have to issue a chassis number so i cant make up my own.
Also i dont need one for SVA, i can sort it after when i register etc.

seems to vary; the chassis numer is 9 characters min, max 17.

You DO need one for SVA, that's the way the car is identified until its fully registered. Th VIN number has to be on the SVA application form,
see page 1 below.

I made mine up using my name, date of birth etc. I contacted DVLA as they
need to approved it, which they did and I punched it onto the chassis. Hope that helps.

I MOT'd the car this time and the station noticed the DVLA had sent my log book back with the donor VIN, not bad to say they had supplied me
with the replacement VIN when I built my chassis. It's all gone back now to be changed, if it wasn't for the computerised MOT it
wouldn't have been caught unless I got rid of the car and could have caused problems later.
