Q plate on new parts ??
Hello guys.
My build is coming along nicely but im wondering about my plate. I have a new engine, re-con gearbox and diff new chassis (home built) custom made
steering rack, manifolds, etc etc so basically most of the car is new. Im not to bothered about getting a new reg but I would rather not get a
q-plate.
My rear bearing carriers are from a sierra 4x4 and the front uprights from std 2wd sierra I have the log books but im wondering what approach to
take.
I could machine my own uprights therefore making all major components new, what do you reckon ?? what do i need to avoid a q-plate ?

First question is whether your new engine is capable of passing the current emissions legislation.
If you go for a new registration, then you get the full works!

technically to get a new reg all bar one major item must be new
ie receipts for everything as new so uprights from a scrapped sierra don't count as new .
The engine OR box can be secondhand,not both.

OK, so I wont go for a new reg (don't really like the format anyway
but am I able to use the plate from the donor of the uprights ?? its seems a little unlikely due to them being such a minor part but seeing as the
rest would be new ???
My other idea is to get hold of log book etc from a rx7 seeing as im using an engine and box that would have originally been used in one, but then my
diff is from a sierra 4x4 but it's re-cond so would that be ok?

It's all done on points. I don't have the list with me but from what I remember engine, gearbox and axle (diff and drive shafts) have the
most points. From what you are saying I don't think you will get a plate based on either the RX7 or Ford donor. The only way I can see you
getting a donor related plate is to say the engine was fitted to the Ford or vice versa. The biggest problem then is if the DVLA want to inspect the
vehicle for their V627/1 form which lists where all the major components used and where they came from. The inspector who did mine was all nudge nudge
wink wink about what I had entered but I had told the truth, he says they see some with bike engines said to have been fitted in 15 year old Sierras
etc.

with so many different bits it sounds like a q plate scenario (no main single donor) I am no expert but gather that certain key parts must be from the
same donor car if an age related plate is what you want. In some scenarios you can tell the dvla that you changed the engine in your donor (before
you register it as scrap!) to the one you're using for your kitcar (very dodgy with bike engines, yes officer i fitted a fireblade engine into
my mk2 escort), this can help with the parts coming from a single donor, don't know if this'll help in your case.

seems the best thing to do is to say the diff and drives shafts from a sierra were fited to the RX7.
Its quite common to chage the diff on many old cars when you start pusing up the power so maybe i'll get away with this.
