Emisions tests
If i pass SVA with my 1986 donors 2.9 engine and then upgrade the engine to a 1995-97 one, will the emisions be tested differently at MOT. I know
there is normally alot of talk about emisions on here but couldn't find anything that helps.
The reason im asking is that if they do change i may aswell fit the newer, bigger engine from the start.
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Engine numbers are not normally checked at MOT test

If you build and register as 'old' no emmsions then putting in a new engine does not change the requirement next MOT time.
Mines being built and registered with an 893 blade, but next year may well get a later R1 upgrade... or turbo !

If you declare the newer engine then the emissions will be tested at the relevent engine age, if you don't declare then the engine will be
tested at a lower engine age.

this is one of those questions that pops up regularly to which IMO there seems to be no definitive answer.
I'll add my 2p to muddle things up as I understand them.
If you get a Q-plate then it is visual only test.
If age related then the registration (or other document) has pritned on it the emission limits and those are what the MOT testers will use - also read
that this will apply to Q-plate too.
Now if you register with an older engine, then fit a later one, in theory the registration document is update with eninge number/capacity and possibly
emissions too.
If age related plate, one would/may hope the MOT tester will test to the car age rather than try to figure out from the engine number what year it
is.
So in short, I dunno for sure - you may need tpo write to DVLA/VOSA for definitive answer.

From Totalkitcar.com site
A If your car has an AGE-RELATED plate he’ll assume that the engine is the same age as the plate and do the test accordingly. However, if your
age-related plate refers to pre-Aug 1998 (‘S’ Prefix) you will continue to get the visible smoke test for the life of the vehicle REGARDLESS of the
age of the engine. Remember though that this does NOT include PERSONALISED plates as in this case the vehicle will continue to be tested according to
its age and NOT the vehicle registration number.
