Confirmation of SVA requirement
Hi all
I'm in the process of making my dashboard, and wanted to confirm the bottom radius should be greater the 19mm for hard surfaces.
Many thanks

That is quite a radius. How the hell do people achieve this? I was planning on using an edging strip, but I cant see you would get anything with a
radius that big!

something i did once to get a soft radius was to wrap a piece of hosepipe in cloth so it looks like a tadpole, then staple the flange to some mdf then
cover in vinyl of leather, the radius is then uniform and soft enough when pressure is applied.
Or you could buy tadpole foam from an upholstery suppliers.

I used 2" foam, cut a strip to make a 2" by 2" foam section strip.
Then cut with a knife a 1" cut along the middle of one side.
Put glue in cut and stick over the ali dashboard sheet metal. Result is soft (5mm radius) and held firmly.

If the dashboard is solid, the bottom radius must be at least 19mm. The radius can be less than 19mm if it is cushioned.
19mm isn't really that big a radius.

So a solid 19mm rad section would do? Ie if I make up a carbon fibre round to bond onto my carbon dash, then that will suffice? Or does the radius
have to be soft?

the radius can be hard as long as it's 19mm. I'm just trying to work out how to do it now with out fibreglass or CF

I got some lagging pipe and cut a quarter section out of it to make a 3/4 circle then covered it in nylon, attached some aliminium bar to the cut
surface and a spacer bit of wood on the back of the dash. IE basically just some covered lagging so it radiuses the bottom of the dash. No problem @
either SVA.

Don't make the big mistake most do, a 19mm radius is a 38mm pipe. I used 40mm waste pipe, you can cut it with a stanley knife, bend it with a
heat gun and split it to push over a flat panel. Bonded it on with PU and covered with yoga mat.

I just hammered the bottom edge of my ally dash round a 38mm tube. I will put edging on the back of this just in case but it will be out of sight
anyway. There is also nothing going on the dash pre SVA except in the exempt zone.

I used a bit of square section wood of the appropriate size and planed it with a hand plane into a circle on two sides. I also notched it with my
router so that I could easily attach it onto my MDF dashboard. Very cheap and simple and you can fire staples into wood easily when fixing the vinyl.
