Oy corumba! Not again....
We need a sticky on this topic!!
No
It's not a necessity and can actually be a bad idea cos it possibly makes the DVLA more likely to demand an MOT after 1 year and not 3.....

i didnt have one and notts vosa told me i didnt need one and peterborough dvla told me i didnt need one.
how ever might be worth getting a local mot garage to do a test to check it out, however not put it on the system, just go through the test with out
the paperwork, brakes lights etc etc

No MOT before SVA - but mine insisted on having an MOT after SVA. No if's, but's or maybe's.
Seems as though different centres have different opinions.
Right pain in the ar$e as obviously I have to MOT from day one. The MOT this year was interesting - the guy didn't know how to assess the car
for emissions so basically didn't bother doing them and just passed the car. Top chap.

If they insist on an MOT just insist on knowing what it'll show up that an SVA test doesn't. They're lazy as well as ignorant-
saying you have to have one is the easy option (it's your time and £50 after all). They'll quickly decide you don't need one if
getting one means they have to do what they paid for (ie do some work)....
I even went as far as faxing them the MOT test criteria and asked them to highlight the ones that aren't shown up during SVA and fax it back to
me.....
20 minutes later they rang saying I didn't need an MOT any more....

I'd put it slightly differently-
different DVLA centers get it wrong in different ways because very few of them know what the they are doing......

I got an MOT done by a local "friendly" garage, done on the chassis number, no reg no, just a test and a certificate. More for my own
peace of mind that I could drive to the SVA safely.
Post SVA, I went to the DVLA, who asked for the MAC. No mention of the MOT certificate.
Different offices, different rules I'm afraid.

6 months after SVA i tried to tax online. Stopped due to no MOT. Called Stockton, they confirmed not needed. Sent V5 and cheque in and they sent me
the tax. V5 was returned to Swansea then back to me later.
Defo no Mot before SVA or for 3 years.
What Mike did is sensible and used to be called pre-MOT i believe. Dependant on garage i guess.

Well you need a working horn for MOT and minimum tread on your tyres and the rules for mirrors vary from SVA.
