Loss of SVA test

Hi all
Does any one know any more about the possible changes to the SVA
I have just been rereading a post from ACE (Association of Car Enthusiasts)
which states that the SVA will cease to be at the end of march 2009 and will become IVA and would then require the fitting of ABS.
This would effectively put a stop to most home building of cars.
I find this rather worring as having already spent a substantial amount of time and money and it is unlikely that I will finish building by the end of march 2009

Cheers

Keith

this was mentioned a while ago. I'm sure if it happens it will stop people builting cars as much as the SVA test did or the fitting of cats. ABS doesn't even look all that complicated.

I got this in an email from the SMMT this morning...

quote:

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders gathers that the UK Department for Transport aims to publish its consultation on the new European Whole Vehicle Type Approval laws soon, probably in early May. The wide-ranging change to the law will start a year later, progressively affecting virtually every type of vehicle on UK roads. "Much of the effect will be for vans, trucks, trailers, buses and coaches and their bodywork," said Robin Dickeson, commercial vehicle affairs manager at the SMMT. "We're pleased that things seem to be moving at last, though far too many people still don't realise effect it will have their businesses. In particular, it will hit van and truck dealers who will need to do things differently. The SMMT wants as many people as possible to look out for the consultation when it arrives and reply to it.

And from the seminars I went to, it seems that the SVA will NOT be affected, maybe a name change, but test centres WILL get very busy, so expect waiting times to increase, and no more DIY trailer builds.

Also, last I heard was the WVTA would not come into effect until 2012 at the earliest.

Intreasting bit about the trailers, I was thinking of building a small tear drop caravan (don't laugh) so I guess this will be out of the question now (unless I'm quick!).. But not sure how they are going to enforce this as trailers are not registered, how is anyone going to know it's not build before the start date of any scheme?

I asked exactly that question. The answer was a resounding....

'errr.... dunno'

As for self build trailers, you will be able to do it, but it would be subject to a type approval test, ie an SVA for your trailer.

And I love teardrop trailers, theres some good plans here...

Yep good things teardrops, hope to make one along the lines of your links.. Going to make a large effort to keep the weight down as I would like to tow it behind the lndy, time will tell (also depends how lardy the indy build ends up!)..

I expect the SVA bit for the trailers is not going to be a real problem.. I think I might have a few years yet till they sort something workable out, something would have to be phased in over a VERY long time period.. Still at trailer SVA type thing would not put me off!
