don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Yeah there's a few "we'll never know" things. Like people generally being nastier on the streets. When I was a lad (i.e. pre '97) we all used to play on the streets on our bikes and would never get abuse from anyone. Now on the same street no school kids are playing and douchebags roam free to taunt and swear at people. And lads mags, when I was at school the most you'd see on loaded or FHM was a girl in a bikini, now it's all women with huge wabs holding them or a couple of ladies holding each other, it's mad.

The mental gymnastics a landlord will employ to justify immoral actions is clinically fascinating. Just because something is legal doesn't make it moral.

Well if Dopey Dave gets in you better ALL brace yourselfs when he start off with his 6Bn cuts.

Having suufered what a Tory Government has done before with 17% Interest rates and Negative Equity I would rather be where we stand today.
Brown was succesful Chancellor since 1999 he may not be the most personable but then is smarmy Dave any better, I think not.
The state of the economy is a world wide affair not localised to the UK and if Cameroon makes it any better for me I will eat my hat

On a similar theme, do you remember years ago when teenage mutant ninja turtles were renamed 'hero turtle' because ninja was regarded too violent? And now, we have the 'Saw' series of movies. How things have changed (for the much worse). But, that is social decay, and cannot specifically be put at anyones door.

I blame the media, though im not sure why. I have a nagging idea at the back of my mind about news travelling too fast and causing positive feedback loops, but the idea just wont form fully. What starts as a small blip is suddenly amplified across the world, whereupon it feeds itself into something bigger.

Saddam allegedly murdered a million of his people, and the unecessary Iran-Iraq war left another million dead. So you could say, the toppling actually saved 1m net lives over the next 30 years.

Yup - had a look and this one makes interesting reading..

link

to quote page 3 section 2

"When Labour took office in 1997, the public finances were already starting to improve following the deterioration seen during the recession of the early 1990's, thanks to the substantial tax increases and cuts to public spending implemented by the previous Conservative government since 1993. During Labour's first four years in office, the public finances strengthened further, as the new government stuck to the tight public spending plans laid out by the Conservatives. The following seven years however were characterised by fiscal drift. By the eve of the financial crisis, this had left the UK with one of the largest structural budget deficits in the developed world."

Not good - and cant be blamed on the financial crisis then!!

And with the financial crisis it only gets worse...

link

So for 2009 alone we as a country have spent nearly £160 billion we didnt have, and now the total is around £1 trillion. Quite a debt to have - and one thats not going to be improved by the spend mentality of team Gordon.

Unfortunately there's only one way that this is going to improve, and that involves decisions that we're not going to like (but must be done for long term benefit)
