build folder

can i ask what you have done / did.
i,ve started my build.

as the pile of receipts / paperwork etc is starting to get larger i thought it time to sort it out & put into a file system to show / send off when time comes for vosa/iva inspection.
so should i just put all receipts into a monthly build folder or into a build section folder,
ie receipts for chassis
receipts for engine / running gear
receipts for bodywork
etc etc which would vosa prefer?
thanks for your advice.

You don't need a complicated system, just hold onto any receipts.

I sent a few critical receipts when I sent off for SVA (from memory I sent engine, bodywork, chassis, wheels, steering rack). Most were e-bay receipts. It seemed fine. They don't audit your build but want to be sure that you did it. I guess the engine is the really critical one (as it has a reference number).

I scanned all mine as I got them, just adding each one to the end of a word doc. ( I also kept the reciepts in a folder just in case)

When I applied for SVA, I just printed the one document, signed it and sent it off.

thanks for suggestions, i like idea about scanning them as i assume its best to keep hold of originals just in case the copies i,d send off were "lost" for any reason.
think i,ll scan all receipts for everything & put originals onto a monthly expenditure build folder, that way if i buy something for two sections (engine / bodywork ) they,ll be on same receipt so can,t section them other than by month/date.
maybe i,m being over cautious , just don,t want any hiccups come IVA time.
cheers

The best advice is to hide the folder so wife cant find it and add them up.

RECEIPTS?????

Erm..... Receipts??? I may have overlooked that one!

Most of the stuff ive bought cash, so i havent got receipts. The engine was cash bought, so no receipt, i think i may have thrown out the chassis metal receipt, no receipt for the ali, ermmm ooops!

Does any of this matter? Ive kept a constant photo diary, but i suppose these could be anyones!

VOSA want reciepts to prove you built it, DVLA want reciepts to prove its not built from stolen bits and to decide wether you get an age related or a Q plate.
If you want your registration sorted out quickly by DVLA then a neat clip folder with slip in mounts and all the documentation and photos in some sort of logical order will help them to help you.
When i did it they were happy with my aproach but comented that they have had a shoe box full of reciepts and to be honest they did not rush to complete the registration causing the person with the shoebox to wait over 2 weeks to get his reg number.
They are only human, if you make it easy for them, they will make it easier for you.

thanks for that,
thats why i,d rather get my build folder / record of build in order now so when time comes for iva / vosa when i submit my paperwork hopefully it,ll be a smooth process & less hassle at a nerve wrenching time hoping i,ve actually built the car to an acceptable level to pass the iva.
it makes a change for me to be methodical & prepared
cheers Andy

In terms of whether or not the items are stolen, then I expect it may well matter. If I was in that situation then I would write some receipts out using different hands, paper and pens. If you can remember who you bought the stuff from then so much the better.

In terms of proving who built it, I have been looking into this recently, and although it is a question that they are, in effect, asking, I can't find out what difference the answer makes. Perhaps someone reading this knows and can tell us.

John
