crankcase breather
during my SVA test the examiner raised a concern about my removing the crankcase hose from my R1 engine and replacing it with a breather vent.
Although he never failed me on this particular item he did mention it a couple of times and used the catch all phrase of 'thats not what a
manufacturer would do'.
He also said that during my retest another examiner may notice it and fail me on it
has anyone else come across this issue and what should I do in preperation for the retest - should I drill into the bottom plate of my sausage filter
to keep him happy or is there a persuasive argument I could put forward ?
thanks

That's what I did and it wasn't mentioned on the test.

Just run it to a temporary catch tank. Surely he's on about the potential loss of oil to the road rather than if it's re-circulated to the
engine?

if one examiner passes you on the 1st test and you need a retest the 2nd examiner cannot fail you on a previous item that has already passed.

Although it's not in the SVA regs (as far as I know) it's not been legal (construction and use regs) to vent crakcase gasses to atmosphere
for some time. Exceptions are for older vehicles where thats how they were designed.
My R1 vents to a catch tank and that vents to the air box.

Don't want to start WW3 on this but that's an urban myth, another inspector & even the same inspector can fail you on a retest if he
deems it unsafe. I have only heard of it once, but have heard of it happening at Southampton a couple of years ago.

certainly different testers can fail items that were passed by a previous tester - this happened to me at gillingham (3 testers)
It would be extremely difficult for a tester to fail something which he had personally passed - unless he says it has beem altered or (as said above)
it is deemed to be unsafe.

thanks for the info everyone - looks like it is better to go the safe option and reconnect the pipe and feed it to the airfilter
On the plus side if I get the same tester again he might be easier on other issues if he sees that I have listened to his advice
