OIL LEAK!!!!
Ive just found a small oil leak from the bell housing, dont know whether its the engine or the gearbox but its not a good sign...... its not a good
sign and im thinking i should get the engine out to take a look.... ooer...

If it's the diff that's leaking why do you need to to take out the engine/gearbox to have look?

Engine oil and gearbox oil have a different smell. That should identify.
Either way it will have to come out.

As above... if you sniff it and it makes you start wreching... its gearbox oil... if you smell it and it smells vaguly of petrol, its engine oil

That depends, some gearboxes run on engine oil.
My Old Series 3 Landy run on EP80 in everything except the engine.
My 110 Landy had Red Automatic Transmission Fluid in the gearbox (LT77 box, same as in my Viento).
My Mates Sierra 4x4 used Mobil One, the reccomended oil made the gearbox notchy. the mobil 1 fixed that.
Some geaboxes have lubrication pumps in them and cannot cope with EP80/90 gear oil. The LT77 and R380 (its successor) is a prime example of this. Its
fitted to all Landrovers, a lot of SD1's in fact almost any Leyleand car that used the Rover V8.
So yes you are right, EP gear oil smells different to Engine oil. But it depends on whats in your box.
Usually Engine oil is Black (dirty) and gear oil is still relatively clean.
It could be either a rear crank seal, or the front shaft seal on the box. Eitherway its an engine out if its in a Se7en.

Well the oil is clean but then the car has only been run shortly... The gearbox has gear oil in it and the oil on the floor seems more like engine oil
but im no expert. Ill have to have the engine out when i get a chance... gutted...... and times not on my side what with hopefully getting an SVA in
before the end of april......... hmmm, gonna be a lot of very late evenings.......

Sounds like its going to be the crankshaft oil seal from your description. That means removing the clutch and flywheel too to get to it. Once the
engine is out though it shouldnt be too bad a job

I'm a BEC man myself so unfamiliar with this gearbox / engine interface.
But, does it really need fixing now? Before SVA? I mean, you aren't going to be doing loads of miles are you. The SVA test is pretty much
static, with the exception of the self centring.
If the oil is pouring out then engine out and fix it. If (IMHO) its a little drip then "they all do that".
Get it in for an SVA, even if he fails you for the leak, then you have 6 months to re-test. Even if the leak damages the clutch plates, then they are
going to be a lot cheaper to replace than the cost difference between SVA and IVA?

i feel compelled to ask (tongue in cheek) - what qualifications do you have for assessing oil leaks on funny little sports cars??????
Crank oil seal would be my guess. Never changed one but seem to think it shouldnt be to hard with engine out. With a few hours on your side you should
do it in a couple of nights.

If it's engine oil, check to make sure it's not coming out the rocker cover of head or any other blocked off holes ( like dizzy hole )
also what engine have you got ??

4age engine, Think what im gonna do is monitor it and see how much comes out. its a drip really. mybe a puddle the size of a 50p peice after a day or
two.
Im going to be warming up the engine in the next few weeks and see if that has an effect. If think ill wait untill sva. dont think ill have the time
otherwise. though if i do get the time ill get onto it.
