Warning disposing of donor shell.
I thought i would pass on my present problem with my donor car to help prevent anyone else falling into the same trap.
I was building without a donor until a friend offered me the vin plate and v5 from a mk 1 escort, which i had along with the rear number plate and
left the front plate on the car.
This was over a year ago, and the shell was sold with another roadworthy car as a scrap shell for parts only.A few months back i had a letter from
DVLA asking if i had sold the car as someone was attempting to get a V5 for it.It turned out that the asshole that had bought the roadworthy car plus
rolling scrap shell had applied using the reg no from the front number plate we left on the car by mistake.
I passed on the relevant info to DVLA and was told it was ok and that they would refuse the application and he would have an interview with the
police.
I have just had another letter asking if i have sold the car and if not to send the VIN no reg and coulor of the car to prove i still have it as the
police report was inconclusive
My point is if any one uses a donor car for vin no make sure ALL identifying marks are removed before disposing of it as it is causing me a major
hassle just as i am ready to put the car on the road.
I am going to write back enclosing pictures of the no plate and vin plate and my finished car to hopefully convince them that it was the donor for my
car.
As far as I know it only needs to have provided engine, gearbox and axle to be a legit donor for age related plate.

i cut out my vin and kept both plates just cos i was paranoid! good luck with your problem anyway...

Hi Paul,
I have always done the same as Joel, kept both no. plates and VIN plates, and so far, touch wood, I've been OK!!
I expect your main problem is that Mk1 escorts are now fetching silly money and this toe rag is trying to capitalise on this!!!
Thankfully nobody yet classes dead Sierras as classic cars!!

That's what I did, got both number plates, VIN plate AND cut the chassis number out of the floor next to the drivers seat. Call me paranoid

I sent all the details to DVLA and included photos of vin and rear no plates and my finished car.
Having not heard anything from them so called them today.The latest is that they still cannot decide who owns the car and am arranging to have a
police inspection of both cars. I told them that the parts were now on a new chassis and that as far as i am concerned it belongs to me. They have
insisted on inspecting the cars to decide which one will get a Q plate.
Now not sure if i should be worried as the only identifiable part on my car is the engine which i changed the number on the v5, the gearbox is Sierra
5 speed and axle escort.Unfortunately the donor ? was a rolling shell when disposed of so may be classed as the legit car but suppose i could deny
this.
I think I will have to contact the owner of the shell and tell him he has to declare it scrapped unless he wants a visit from me and a few mates.
This is now really pissing me off because i want to SVA the car and get it on the road, but think i may be safer to wait until sorted.

I think you may be in for a disappointment if the police are involved. If money changed hands for the rolling shell they do tend to see this as
ownership. It's a bit like the Dutton scam but not avoiding SVA. You may be asked why you disposed of the vehicle and hung onto the log book.

If the worst comes to the worst I have a sierra v5 that you can 'take ownership' of from me! I don't think i'll be using it as
i'm gonna be going the q plate route for emissions purposes.
i have the logbook, reg plates, chassis plate!

Could you not tell them that no cash was exchanged and it was handed over on the agreement that it would be scrapped? That would explain why you still
have VIN plate and V5 plus number plate. (Unless a receipt was given of course)
I s'pose its your word against his but you do have a better story than the other bloke IMHO

This is exactly what I have decided on as the shell was given away with another complete car and was made clear that it was fro parts use only. The
fact that I have V5 Vin plate and rear number plate should I hope make the position clear.

Thanks Ned but I am hoping to get my way with this, if not I will go for a Q plate as i will be upgrading to a blade engine later, so that would be my
best option also.

to explain the 'q' plate thingy, i was told on good authority (hicost, who runs a cosworth engined q plate car!) that although the
emissions would still be tricky for the sva, current mot regs for 'q' plate cars mean 1970's checks, ie just visible smoke test.
anyone advise me otherwise?

oh good. mind you my engine is 1970 anyway (i think. yet to be confirmed)

Take a look at Totalkitcar.com site re emissions. looks as if as long as your reg plate is pre 1998 (S) smoke only test will apply...
Got some real help from Totalkitcar bloke the other day. I keep getting tax renewal forms from DVLA saying I need an MOT to retax, Totalkc say I
don't. I called DVLA about 10 times on the subject and in the end they sent me a letter saying without question my car will need an MOT as the
donor was 1990. Bloke from TKC confirmed I did not and said he would call them for me. He did because the next day I got a call from DVLA and the
bloke who had sent the letter out could hardly talk for the lump of humble pie he was having to eat! No MOT required for first 3 years after first reg
regarless of donor age. Love getting one over on DVLA after all the rings they made me jump thru!
