Registration of a new vehicle?
Well the last week has gone surprisingly well with regards to the build, a lot of help from local companies with parts!
But I was looking atregistration of the vehicle after the IVA test. I got a personalised plate with an 'L' prefix for my big 21st
birthday (a few years back now!), but I don't want to lose it. Ideally I'd love to put it on the GTS.
I've got the paperwork from the donor Sierra vehicle ('93 K reg) and a letter frm Ford head office stating thatthe Zetec engine I'm
using came from a '93 vehicle as well. Now I know that 1993 was the changeover year from K to L, but what's the best way to get around
this? Some people hve told me that because the engine and running gear are from different vehicles, I'd have to go with a Q plate.
Please bear in mind that the engine has had a full rebuild from top to bottom with receipts to prove for parts and labour. This also includes an
overhaul of the rear diff, brand new brakes (calipers included), driveshafts and CV joints, and pretty much most (90%) of the vehicle.
Could I ask for the GTS to be registered on a new plate (obviously I'd have to put a CAT on the exhaust for emissions) does anyone know? That
way I could keep my personalised plate and stay happy!

It sounds like you will either get an age related plate (Sierra donor age), or a Q-plate. Either way, no way for you to use your private plate. To
qualify for a new plate, all of your major parts must be new, with the exception of one part that you can overhaul to an as new condition.

You have used enough donor parts to qualify for an age related plate. Unfortunately, the donor prefix 'K' will be your allocated prefix if
you choose to go down this route. Ideally, you need to obtain the V5 for a donor vehicle with an 'L' prefix and use the running gear from
this.
TBH, I'm not sure whether DVLA inspectors could distinguish between the running gear of either a K or L registered donor, irrespective of model

At my SVA I went with a Mondeo Engine and a Sierria (doner Car) gear box
As log as you make the POINT tally they you should be able to get age related. I Could have pushed for YEAR of Manufacture. because the bought MK
chassis was "new" and would contribute to the New points?
I got age Related ('h'. back in 2006
Scot's do it better in Kilts.

With the majority of the parts coming from the Sierra, you should get an age related plate. But it will probably be too old, by a year, to use your
personalised plate.
Due to a DVLA cockup, I've got the best of both worlds. I was allocated an age related 'S' suffix plate (1978) but the logbook
states 1998, so 'S' prefix would be ok

I agree with the others, you won't be able to do it unless you push for a new plate. Which could happen if you were creative with the
receipts.
Alternatively, buy a v5 (may have to come with car attached) from a Granada or a Scorpio or a Sierra of L plate or later. Use that v5 for registration
of your kit.
Break it and sell the parts to re-coup the cost.
Just remember to remove the vin plate etc. when you chop the chassis in!

Sound like a plan to me. I've currently got the engine from the Mondeo/Escort in the GTS, but might go and buy an old rusty L-reg minter, tell
the DVLA I've put my current engine in it (so the V5 can be updated with the new engine number), declare it as sorn, and then do the
transplant!
I take it the DVLA inspection post-IVA will check the engine numbers against the V5 for the aleged donor vehicle?
I know it's not entirely straigh forward, but still means I can keep the personalised reg which I've had for years. Big smiles all
round.
PS - does anyone know the exact swapover date from not-CAT to emmission testing? I know it was 1995, but any idea about the month? Thinking about
buying a Mondeo as the 'donor', but need to know if it's within age limits. Cheers!

If you can get the V5 for an L reg car, you can claim to have used the running gear (minus the engine) and still obtain an age related plate. You
don't have to use the engine from the donor vehicle to qualify for an age related plate.
