Build insurance and VIN #

I'm after a little advice. I've been in contact with Adrian Flux insurers regarding build insurance. As mentioned in another post this came out to be £52 per year. Not bad! However I was then asked for the chassis number. So my questions are as follows:

1. Is build insurance really necessary, or does this just a personal preference?

2. For those that have had build insurance, have you been asked for the VIN number to get this insurance, or had the person on the end of the phone made a mistake?

3. If I do require a VIN number, how would I check that someone doesn't already have a number that I want to use? Or do I have to get an authentic one from the DVLA (I guess I will have to fill in the relevant DVLA forms for this - V627/1 and V55/5)?

Or is there another way round this??

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Cheers
James

I think build insurance is a personal preference. Ours is still up on crates in the garage and would take at least 3 people to get it down. Garage is secure and everyday car is parked in front of garage and alarmed. Its highly unlikely it will get nicked, so no build insurance.

If you need VIN number for insurance purposes, just make your own up. Considering your chances are 14 million to 1 of winning the lottery with 6 numbers, what will your chances be of having the same VIN number as someone else with 17 alpha/numeric digits available

Hope this helps
