Preston DVLA today. Kirkham inspection next tues

I went down to Preston DVLA today to see if I could get my car registration underway.

Spoke to someone called Chris who I believe is the manager - initially he wasn't sure which forms I was meant to fill out. In the end I did a v55 and a built up vehicle inspection report. Is this correct?

I had made my own VIN number up for SVA. He said if they decide my car will be on a Q plate that he would have to reissue me with another VIN number. I tried to tell him nobody needs to decide about the plate, because I don't have the donor v5, but he left out my VIN on the v55 anyway!

He has given me an inspection date for next tuesday at Kirkham - has anybody been there?

I still need to work out how I can get there, as I don't have access to a car with a towbar or the required driving license. Should I drive it to just around the corner from the inspection and get my mum to tow me in?

Apparently if they do give me another VIN, I will have to get a document stamped from a garage to prove I have changed it after the inspection. Presumably this goes to Preston then I can get my tax disc and plates made up.

I have also paid for 6 months tax and the registration fee.

Has anybody had much experience with Preston DVLA? Are they as efficient as I hope?

Thanks

James

As far as I know they should issue you with a VIN number before you go for SVA. I was given a 13 digit number from DVLA Local Office so that I could engrave it in the chassis and secure a plate with it on, that I fixed to the bulkhead. Surely safer in the long run for them to issue a number to prevent you having to grind it out and re-do it for some reason.

I contacted DVLA Preston to sort out the forms and get a VIN number. A guy called Owen does kit cars.

I had car near completion> Filled in V627 with donaor car number, indicating what donor parts had used such as gearbox back axle etc and a covering letter.

Got inspection at Kirkham, took car down on trailer, took five minutes.

Few weeks later got VIN number, bow fitted to car. waiting for final bits for car then will get IVA down at Chadderton.

I had Preston they were terrible.

Firstly they couldn't book an inspection for over a month. Then they took another 5 weeks to decide if a bike engine/gearbox counts as one component or not and do I get a 09 plate or Q. Eventually they decided 09.

With regards to getting the car there do not drive or tow it. I was told by Preston DVLA this would result in immediate prosecution at the inspection centre.

I just went through this last week. borrowed a tow car and rented a trailer.
The guy how did the inspection was very helpful and a nice chap, he was waiting in the car park so would have seen me drive it in if i had.
I also have to change the VIN, but im working in the US right now and i carnt get my missus to restamp it while im away

As far as driving it, You could always argue that swansea said you can drive it to tests under insurance
