Private plates on donors....
Bit of a strange one... my donor has a private plate on it(HIS M3), you can't remove the plate without an MOT unless you're scrapping it,
however because i'm using it as a donor when the time comes to register the car will I be able to keep the plate/transfer it then?
Or does anyone else know how I can get it off sooner?

Put the plate on retention. You can use it whenever you want then, like sorn you have
to update yearly.

If its a donor, then is it not in need of registering to be scrapped?

You don't get the same reg number as on your donor

You can't put a plate on retention without a current mot... stupid DVLA rules! Hence why i'm trying to find out how the donor stuff
works.... do I just keep the V5 and register the car as being scrapped in which case I can apply to keep the private plate? Will I still be able to
keep the v5 then too so I can get an age related plate?
I know I not get the cars original plate but the Private plate should stay mine and i'll just get another from the year the car is made, Thats
fine.

Thats the problem..... what i'm after is a solution. At the minute i'm going to remove all chassis number off the shell and scrap it so I
keep the V5, what I want to do is find out if when I register my kit i'll then be able to transfer the number plate onto retention or if it
means i'll loose the private plate.

The plate has to be put on retention as said. The rules to do this is that the car holding the number has to exist & have tax & mot. So unless
you can get the car an mot and tax it you are onto to plumbs. Scrap the car without having taken off the number when the car was legal & on the
road then you have lost rights to the number. cheers D

Irritatingly I suspect that particular number is going to be worth a lot of money to a BMW owner, possibly enough to make it worth repairing the donor
enough to get an MOT.
How bad is it?
Edit: Re-read, can you really get the number if you scrap it? If you can then scrap it, put up with the Q reg and comfort yourself with a big pile
of cash for the plate.

Reading on the net if I can present the car for inspection so they can see chassis numbers etc I can take it off without an MOT.... hoping they will
come to see it as taking it to my DVLA office without any part the drivetrain fitted my be a problem!

I'd write a nice letter to DVLA and explain your predicament and concerns. I'm sure it's not the first time they've come
across this problem and I'd imagine it's fairly easy to resolve........ but then again, they are the DVLA......

According to DVLA here:
"To retain the registration number, the vehicle must be:
* registered at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
* available for inspection
* of a type that needs an MOT or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) test certificate
* currently taxed
However, if the vehicle is not taxed, you can still apply to retain provided:
* there is no break between the date the tax disc runs out and the start of the SORN
* and the tax disc run out no more than 12 months before the date you apply"
My reading is that it doesn't actually have to have an MOT, but MUST be taxed or SORNed and have had a tax disc not less than a year ago.
So, if the car still physically exists and the above applies, you could trailer it for an inspection?

Years ago I had a landtrover that failed it's MOT . I was still able to transfer that number to another vehicle. This was because I was the
owner of both vhicles.
What about speaking to them and asking to transfer to your tin top... (as a stop gap).
I'm sure that all you have to do is tax and MOT the vehicle reciving the plate and be legal owner of donating vehicle.
Scot's do it better in Kilts.

The answer to your problem is......
.....you get it off by unscrewing the two plastic screws on each plate.
