Documentary evidence of engine age?

I have been reading up on the legal necessaries for registration/SVA, and I am now worried about what documents are needed for proving the age of my engine?

I bought the engine some years ago from a breaker, and as such have no evidence of it's age. There are age stamps all over the various castings on it (all of which are 1988) but I have no paperwork. I know it is from a 1988 astra gte 16v but I have no paperwork to prove as much!!

Any ideas/similar problems encountered?

previously it has been sugested to contact the manufacturer, from the engine number they should know the year it was fitted into a car. so should the police, and really the DVLA should know from their own records anyway, so i dont know why they bother asking us for proof.

You need written age details of the engine at SVA, it determines which set of emission figures you need to achieve. I suggest having a look at the SVA manual section 18 pages 3 and 4.

where did you get yours Wicket? How on earth do you get age certification for a Ford Crossflow? most of them are a mixture of bits from all sorts of years now!

The age stamps (cast in numbers) of the various parts of my vauxhall engines, both from 1988 astras, are all either 1987 or 1988.

I know from the serial number stamped on the block that my engine was built in June 1980, and the Ford technical dept will give written proof of age for the SVA man.

There is a Ford reference table of year/month codes for the X-flow engines and a quess there are also one's for other engines as well.

Haven't SVA inspectors got the same infromation on engine codes that we have? My engine is the original from my donor (engine number is the same as the last 7 digits of the chassis number) and I have the V5 to prove the age of the car - is that enough?

cheers Wicket!! I'll have a word with my local Vauxhall dealer for a start, and if no joy there at least they should be able to give me the details of the contact at Vauxhall tech Dept.

The SVA engineers may well have the info but the manual specifically says that the onus is on the presenter for proof of age.

...........but would a V5 with the right numbers be sufficient proof?

Barrie

I too have a crossflow engine, although sadly no V5, I bought a big pile of bits from a bloke who "started but didn't finish" a locost.

Could you post the Ford address you wrote to for confirmation of the age of engine so I can do the same.

Also if I get this evidence would I be entitled to an age related number plate or would it still be a Q plate as most of the other components are either new of from a Cortina (not the escort the engine came from).

Many Thanks

You are in much the same state as me except I didn't even get the part finished project (though I am buying ST bodywork and chassis and IRS)

I have the Vauxhall XE engine but no logbook. Anybody got the address to write to at Vauxhall too?

engine was the original fitted to
the vehicle).

Pointy my understanding is you must have at least 3 main components from a donor car to get a age related plate.
and when the dlva man comes to see your chassis no he will confirm this.

Thats what happened to me anyway.

SVA two days to go!!!!!!!!
