when you say its gone, is it corroded so you cannot see it, never had one as in a replacement block or possibly been ground off? without means of establishing age from number might have problems

Zetec engines only have a number if they are the original fit. Service or new replacements do not have a number.

Dealers are instructed to restamp replacement engine with the old number.

Best thing to do is go down the srappy find a pre aug 95 car and write the number down. take a hammer and chisel and obliterate the number and stamp it on your engine.

Then no cat required for emmisions

Presumably that's my answer too, my engine swop was to a Zetec with no number, was wondering how I'd get on with the DVLA

Am I correct in thinking that pre 95 was Silver top?

yes but i think the cam covers are interchangable, so if you got a blacktop, go get an old silver top for the sva, and blag it

Take a picture of the engine no, as well,
so you can match up the spacings etc

I had to do this on a GTE i bought several years ago, and in my haste to buy the car didnt notice the engine was numberless (filed off )
