how do i get a chasiss number for my locost?

That depends entirely on your local DVLA office. Some insist on issuing you one that they've chosen, some will let you make up your own (as long
as no one else has used it and it doesn't contain any disallowed characters). My local office just won't give you one at all, which is
really helpful...

If you are based in the North East and using Gosforth DVLA, this is what I did:-
Make up your own VIN number, 17 digits and include it on your SVA / IVA application to VOSA. VOSA write back to giving you your test date and
referencing the VIN number in black & white. Get the plate made up. Go to the IVA and pass / fail / retest as many times as you need.
Take the MAC certificate with the VIN number on it, along with the letter to VOSA to the DVLA at Gosforth.
No they may be thick, awkward, stubborn and slow, BUT the one thing they won't argue with is another faceless government department. They just
accepted my VIN number, because VOSA issued it.
Simples.

thanks guiness do these 17 digits all have to be numbers or can you also put leters in the chasiss number

You are supposed to have checked with some agency that the number is unique. I told them I had and that was sufficient.

For SVA they could be letters or numbers.
Letters are more likly to be unique (each unit 26 options rather than 10).

Oh yes they will (depending on which office). The Borehamwood one certainly will argue, even if a kit manufacturer issued it, and VOSA OK'd it.

No you can't. It's a different car, and it needs a different number.

Hi,
I hear what your saying about it being a different car, but those details can all be changed cant they? The engine number on the V5 will remain the
same as it is the same engine..... so it would just be the body type, etc etc that would be altered..
No body gone down this route?

I was going to do exactly this as my middy build uses the shell of an existing car with modifications, all the glass is stamped with the VIN as well
as the chassis in 2 places which would make changing it a real pain.
Slightly different to a kit car as its a radically modified car with an engine in the back, however not enough of the original car remains to keep the
reg plate. Gonna phone my local DVLA office today and see what they say. The DVLA national office just palmed me off with an 'ask your local
office' response.
Why are all the fun things in life expensive!
