IVA Fail today at Chadderton
Long day,
early start
- bad start - getting it off the trailer, car went a bit quick with the snow (excuse!) jerked on the handbrake and promptly broke the left cable
nipple off!!
Bottom line was that there were quite a few niggley problems, but all quite do - able:
Here's the list:
IVA Failure points:
Broken Handbrake cable (snapped it getting car off the trailer!)
Vin plate not accessible enough. ( under nose cone).
Bias bar not lockwired.
Cover required below wiper motor.
Front top wishbone bracket wants better edge protection.
Exhaust clamp requires turning further in to side of car. 100mm sphere touches it.
Exhaust mounting bracket edge to blunt and bolt end to cover. ----ditto----
Foglight lens needs to be marked with B or F bottom line it must be brighter
than brakelights.
Steering column upper clamp bolts missing locking tabs.
Diff upper mount needs 4 bolts not 2.
Rear camber adjuster locknuts only hand tight and better with 2 each side.
Uninsulated connectors horn.
Also Advisory points:
Wheel nuts dished washers not tight basically the wrong wheel nuts in use.
Fuel pump relay contacts low down and pointing forward will likely prematurely fail due to water ingress.
Mentioned during test but I think he forgot to list it
.
Sierra mushroom converters require secondary locking eg. Drilling through side of upright and bolting. (In case of the pinch bolt working loose).
All in all the tester (David for those of you who know Chadderton) was very helpful, knowledgeable and also said some very complimentary things about
the build quality.
Looks like a long list but I could do most of them in a couple of hours!
I'm happy
But maybe not quite this happy!!

Not too bad a list , as you say you should be able to sort it out fairly quickly What cables are you using? I used unmodified Allegro cables on mine
which has the independant rear end. Classic Mini's used a plastic cover over the wiper motor . I moulded a bulge on each side of the nose cone
because of the exposed top wishbone mounts but I had to respray it , The upper steering column mount is secured with the original (Sierra) type nylock
nuts, haven't heard you need locktabs. If you get stuck finding a wiper motor cover let me know I may?? still have one. Mel

Hard luck! As you say a lot of niggly things and better the cable fails now than sometime more dangerous rather than just embarasing. None of the
common bigger problems (emmisions and noise). Dave is a good guy but very thourgh. He did my SVA 2 1/2 years ago. Soon be sorted.

ps. good choice going on the trailer as it turns out.

I used the brass section from a terminall block on the end of the cable tightened the screws then soldered it

Thanks, Mel - used the old Sierra cables - but my blobs of weld weren't too strong, I think - Allegro cables - can you still get them? Yhe cover
over the wiper motor is simple - I just need a sheet of ply screwed to the underside of the glovebox - could do it asleep! The upper mount on the
steering extension isn't Sierra - it has a plate right across, but the tabs which should have been there have long since snapped off - nylocks
with longer bolts is probably the better option.

Could you clarify what this means,
"Diff upper mount needs 4 bolts not 2. "
(bit worried as my diff mount is two long bolts through the diff, these both go into a large bracket either side of the diff that is bolted top and
bottom onto the chassis).

Yeah, Easy one - most people (and correct me if I'm wrong) just mount the diff with the two holes through the plate on either side - I have also
used the top mount which threads onto the back of the diff with a big rubber mount. This mounts to the chassis above with 4 bolts (but I've only
put 2 in - hence he wants 4).

That very fix was used on my clutch cable by a Robin Hood owner and got me the 15 miles or so home easily.
Incidentally Dave was one of the testers on my retest. He was really helpful and even let me tweek the carb settings whilst it was on the machine so
that they passed.
Better fail than mine so you'll fly by next time.

No retest until Jan - got to earn some brownie points 'catching up' on other work I've shelved these past 6 months while I've been
working on the car!! No rush anyway - they aren't winter cars are they?
More clarification photos...

Yes, I agree - decent guy - I had a bit of an issue with proving engine age - I had a photocopy of the calibra's V5 with the engine number but
the last 3 digits were reversed (obvious typo error) but not something I could do anything about - the car was never mine, and had been scrapped. The
engine also had the date cast into the block - 05 06 90 (below engine mount but I showed him a photo) - he um ahhed a bit then said he was happy to
test it to 1990 standards - phew!
Then he told me it was running lean, and showed me how to correct it! 0.54% (3.5% limit) and HC 248 (limit 1200).
As you say, good but thorough! Good point about the cable - parked on a steep hill out of gear in 6 months time it could have been dangerous or even
tragic! Crossed my mind too.
Regards, Steve.

Unluckcy chap. Still, as you say, could have been a lot worse and at least the tester wa civil and it's always nice when someone appreciates
your hard work. Hopefully it won't be too long before you get sorted and you'll be ready for the looooooong-hot summer
It looks like the Midget is winning at the moment......

As you say - a good fail. Most of that stuff is easy enough....I'm sure you'll fly it next time!
Good luck,
Rich.

do you have to use the top plate as well, or do you just need 4 bolts if you use it?
Or can you get away with just the two long bolts?
Cheers,
