More IVA borrocks

From Blatchat:

After sending my IVA application form in yesterday I had a phone call this morning from VOSA
saying that because this was the third car I have had tested in 4 years or so I am now classed as a professional builder
and could not accept my application for this amateur build IVA test.

Hi, I am very interested in this as I have 3 cars to IVA of my own and I am involved in building at least 3 more for others. I am not doing this for a living (currently) but understand I may be classed as professional.

What are the implications of becoming a proffesional car builder with regard to IVA and registering?

I heard that somewhere but I have not really looked into it yet. Can you point me at the info and save me some time trolling around for it?

Cheers Si.

How can a caterham builder be classed as a "professional"?????

Locosts I can believe, but a caterham is almost like a numbered jigsaw puzzle - except easier!

So, if that's the case turn it to an advantage & submit for the manufacturers test with the 3 previous vehicles listed as your previous production. Manufacturers test is £199 & the only significant difference is that anything you submit has to be CAT tested irrelevant of engine age.

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

Is it as simple as that? Do you need to prove you have business premesis or anything and what do you need to do/prove to show you are professional? Could I submit my first build as a professional build? I will be IVAing someone elses car in the next three months that I have finished for them). I do have qualifications in engineering and a portfolio of some engineered items I have produced previously althoughy these are not car related.

I put my first car in for test under the manufacturers test last October. They asked for proof of how many models had previously been produced during the last 12 months - I had already provided a letter on my headed paper explaining that this was the first of this model for IVA & that I had previously submitted one car of the same type & one similar car for SVA test - when I rang up they agreed they had that letter & "hadn't seen it on the back of the file", they appeared mainly concerned that I wasn't going to manufacture more than 300 during the next 12 months!!! Everything I sent in was sent on my headed paper, but quite frankly you could produce something very similar using any word processor. At the time I was not VAT reg & was trading from home. I was never asked for any proof of manufacturing or of proof of the business existance, tho' I could have proved both if requested to as I have plenty of receipts to Furore Cars & have paid taxes (or claimed them back!) for about the last 4 years. So I would say, give yourself a business name submit the car with a 17 digit chassis no. ending 001, or 003, whatever you are saying this chassis no. is in your production sequence, submit with the required docs on your "business" notepaper & away you go.
I would also add that I subsequently registered the car in my own name (not the companies) & it is insured as my private car for SDP purposes (which it is) so it should not cause you any registration probs either - just because you have produced the car in a professional capacity does not mean it then has to be used in a commercial way rather than for SDP.
TTBOMK all of the above is correct & above board & so far as I am aware does not even bend any rules let alone break them - what you would be doing would not be identical & might be a little more questionable but I would still say worth a go.

Great, cheers Russ. I think I may well give it a go then and as a one man band It'll take some doing to exceed 300 cars in a year!
