DVLA and why did I save the VIN from the sierra?
On advice from people on here, one of the things I did when I cut up the Sierra was to cut out the bonnet slam panel with the attached ID plate. (I
also cut the one out the floor but I've mislaid that one).
Going to start the reg process tomorrow - do I need to actually take that part with me? If not, why did I keep it all this time?

Gave DVLA the plates, kept a photocopy for my records.
Helps proove you have built the kit from 1 donor, disposal of the shell as scrap not through a scrap yard who would need the V5 to take it off DVLA
records.
Just helps when DVLA ask questions

When you go to the DVLA to register the car and show them the proofs, you give them the log book and VIN plates (once they have accepted that you have
enough points for the age related plate,) and they can then sumirarily scrap the car IE take if off their system.
Beware of the Goldfish in the tulip mines. The ONLY defence against them is smoking peanut butter sandwiches.

Thanks, Clive, Warren and Snapper! So I give them the VIN plate (I've still got the number plates, the logbook, the reciept for £9.60 - weigh in
and the sorn paperwork) as part of the proof it has been disposed of correctly? Hope the poor chap doesn't cut hissselfs on the sharp bits
By the way, Warren - I don't think someone else would want the log book for this?

If youve cut it up and Sorned it, then i think you may have problems. (ive just read below and it sounds a bit negative, but intended to be
helpful).
When you scrap a car (as far as i understand though ive never had to do it fortunately) you take what you want from the car, and have it collected /
take it to a vehicle recycler where they tick/you the "Scrapped" box on the V5 and send it off, rather than add a new keeper.
If its sorned, has no VIN and has been cut up, then it cant be "Scrapped" on the V5. If it cant be scrapped, then the car still
exists....
I might be confusing myself here, but i thought there was a process for scrapping, which didnt include cutting it all up and removing the VIN
plate.
Hopefully someone will be able to prove the above inaccurate. Good luck though mate.
Kindest Regards,
Richard.

Quoting Matt:

Sorry, that pic was from 2 years ago - its long gone. I was simply replying to Warren (big wasa's) comment.
To 'Makeeverything':
as far as scrapping it is concerned, I chopped it up, removed the VINs and the numberplates took it for weigh in - they gave me a reciept which states
the vehicle's reg......
£9.60p !
I have kept the vehicle 'live' on SORN since.
When I go to DVLA, I will supply:
the V5 logbook,
the reciept for the metal,
quite a few photos of the cut up shell,
the VIN plate itself (together with half of the slam panel). Numberplates.
The built - up report will state the tag numbers of the gearbox and diff
and state the reg. of the Sierra as the donor of these, the 'axles' and the steering column.
Where does this differ from how it should be done?

That's pretty much how I did mine. SORN the V5, sell the shell as scrap metal, and the DVLA took the donor off their system when I registered
the kit (on an age-related plate). As usual, different people probably have different experiences depending on which DVLA office they used? Only
thing I didn't have was any mention of a car or numberplate on the scrap metal receipt...

It's still on the DVLA system, so the scrappers didn't do anything with the numberplate info so you should be absolutely fine.

The way of scrapping and keeping the V5 active so you can use it to get an age related plate is to SORN the car and get rid in such a way that if it
gets to a dismantler they can't find any identifying numbers (VIN or number plate). If they do spot a number they have (I believe under the
terms of their license) to tell the DVLA at which point it gets scrapped and you can't get an age related plate on that V5 any more.
No problem having SORN and getting rid of the bits (unless you forget to renew and get a fine).

Hi, First of all, you'd get a better response - (more people would see it) if you sarted a new topic.
The way I see it, DVLA simply need you to prove that your car is a genuine 'new' car and not eg. an old dutton that's been rehashed,
etc - in this case, they say there is a 'Question' over the identity - hence the 'Q'.
You need to use a new chassis and at least two (hence it could be more) of the following from the donor:
Suspension (F+R)
Both 'axles'
transmission (gearbox and diff? - not too sure here)
Steering assembly
Engine.
Obtain the tag numbers / serial nos as you are refurbishing these bits - the more info you can throw at them the better!
From the donor, I personaly have used the axles, gearbox and diff (new prop) and the steering column - but the rack is from a Mk2 Escort.
I am now waiting for DVLA's response to my submitted paperwork
One more thing - keep all reciepts! Especially major parts.
Hope this helps - but also look on the govt.
