Cracking Fury Rear carriers - anyone ?
Hello All,
In the process of stripping down an old fury, and i have just noticed that both of the rear hub carriers have cracked through in the same place (i.e.
same on both sides of the car)
Here's a picture of one of them - has anyone seen this before ?

Hmm, yep
So whats the fix ?, is it just a case of getting a better version ?

Just a couple of observations
the lack of a washer or spreader plate under the bolt head won't have helped.
The fracture appears brittle in nature ie, noobvious plastic deformation (permanent stretching) this makes me suspect the parent metal is in a
brittle/hard condition,
It would be interesting to see the actual fracture surfaces of the cracks and a good look at the edges of the plate adjacent to the holes, this
might give an indication as to which edge the crack started from.

I'm live axle so have no direct exprience of this, but I'm susre Tim H will have seen it. Have a look see at what he did at the rear.

I think from memory TimH used a single through bolt for both bottom wishbone mounting with a spacer between on his RGB Fury. That reduces the flexing
and stops the cracking in theory. It's an upgrade I've been intending to do but never got arond to... yet.

History - well my car is an race'er (not road legal) which has seen quite a bit of action. Its for this reason that i am stripping it totally
down and rebuilding it, replacing as i go.
Speaking to Tim H today via email, it appears that he went through a few of these racing, until doing this mod with the spacer (just need to find a
bolt long enough !). Not going to try welding / repairing the current units, so its a phone call to Fury Sports Cars on monday morning.

Indeed. In fact, those look like some of my photos up there! Cerrtainly looks like my work bench.
This is a "standard" IRS Fury problem, certainly every racer has seen this. I think it's due to the thrust forces from the wheel
(which are pushing in and out on the centre of the upright) essentially flexing the upright at the bottom. I tried to fix it with various bits of
strengthening, all to no avail. However, what does work, although I still used to check this assiduously, is to use a single long bolt all the way
through the two eyes at the bottom of the upright. (Not that it's easy to get a 1/2 HT bolt of that length without parting with lots of
cash...
Other people have done this and also machined a spacer to fit exactly between the eyes at the bottom. Apparently this also helps.
