Ignition Key - other options??

Is it a requirement of SVA to have an ignition key and steering lock?

I was hoping to do away with the key and steering lock altogether and install a cat 2 immobiliser (eg Toad laserkey), along with a switch and starter button. I was told that the SVA states a mechanical means of immobilisation is required which could be interpreted as a toggle switch (obviously placed in an SVA compliant location).

Does anyone have experience of getting this combination passed an SVA. The reason i ask is that my donors key went missing before i got the car and being stingy dont want to replace key and lock if i can help it.

Thanks,
Darren.

AFAIK you do not need an ignition key or steering lock, However you do need 2 seperate means of imobilising the car, one of which must be mechanical but impossible to activate when the engine is running.

Not sure how people have achieved this though.

i wonder if the action of locating the laserkey against the dash mounted socket is considered to be mechanical....pushing my luck there perhaps.
I'll have to get my head around if a feed from the engine can be used to activate a seperate relay to allow a switch to work when engine is off but not when running - possibly feeding from low tension ignition circuit. Im sure i read somewhere that Caterham were working on this. Dont know what the solution is though yet.

This thread will probably turn into an electrical discussion. May need to be moved.

I would have thought mechanical meant just that
How about a bike type disklock put through one of your drilled and grooved

wonder if a removable steering lock or gearstick to handbrake type lock would be acceptable ?

Had my eye on a 'steering lock' for a while... It's called 'the bat' and it isn't to subtle as too it's other possible uses

I passed sva with no mechanical means of immob. I have a toad powerkey electronic immob fitted in the car and no ignition key, just a lurvely button that glows red when you can start the car, not before and not after, just when you can.
starter button all lit up ( before it set fire to the loom ) 5 june

Brooky,

Thanks for the feedback. Im pleased someone has got passed the SVA with this set up. Im now well on the way to junking all of the stalks to keep the column area looking cleam (might keep indicator stalk for convenience).

Ive just got hold of a toad laserkey. Brand new, boxed and no wiring instructions.
Q1 - Did you fit a switch to flick on before pressing the starter button? If so what is the purpose of this extra switch? Do you have a wiring diagram?
Q2 - does anyone know how to wire in the immobiliser? The instructions say it is a two circuit immobiliser. On the loom there are two pairs of wires taped together so i know these are where i connect into the two chosen immobiliser circuits (low tension ignition feed and relay feed to fuel pump relay) when i cut the wires. What about the other wires? Cant remember the colours - box is at home. I assume ign switch live (no ign switch though!), perm live, ground etc.

Thanks,
Darren.

is the toad laserkey just an imobiliser key fob with a box that triggers a couple of relays? i've seen other imobilisers with a couple of keys that trigger relay to imobilise hte car, is this all it does? i've just been looking at a microscan mi600: http://www.dcp-shop.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=74_80&products_id=820

Hi Ned,

Yes, very similar. Little socket on the dash (usually with flashing red light). Key fob type thing that you just touch onto the socket. I got mine out of the adtrader for £39. Supposed to be professional fit only hence no wiring instructions. I can go back to seller and get the wiring details. Also saw Toad laserkey on the 'net for approx £41. Ive had one before - very easy to use. Only problem was the tosser fitted it to the main fuel pump feed and it caused a power drop that slowed the pump down = all sorts of rough running bother. After finding the fault i re-wired it and problem solved (hence why it is best to fit to low tension side etc).

The better immobilisers have a key with chip inside, no need to locate to a socket etc. Leave fob in pocket and immobiliser senses that it is in range - very similar to modern systems that are embedded in the ignition key.

The reason i want to use the laser key is that i'm trying to do away with the ignition key, hoping the immobiliser will delay the low life, use of seperate switch before the starter button allows another switch to be hidden to further delay the low life. Of course if we did not have to endure the scurge of society the simple button would suffice.

Hope this helps,
Darren.

I have an aircraft hooded toggle for ignition and a push button for start, was going to fit an fia style battery cutout switch, but not sure where to put it so it doesn't fall foul of radiusing etc. these transponder type imobilisers seem like a good idea too...

Hi, yes I have an extra switch. its an aircraft style covered toggle switch which is on the left of the steering wheel (within sva exemp area) which is the ignition itself. I also have a complete issolation switch under the scuttle - again within sva exempt area.
The powerkey immob is one of those proximity sensing types so iflick the switch as i get in and as long as my keys are in my left pocket the sensor mounted on the tunnel side picks it up and activates the starter circuit and the fuel pump, so i just press the start.
The red light on the start is wired live to the immob and negative to the oil pressure switch so it only lights up when the immob is off and the engine is not turning - or if the oil pump breaks at 90 mph and i loose oil pressure , but that hasnt happened yet.
