Trailer hire
Can anyone recommend a company in the Birmingham area where i can hire a van with a car carrying bit on the back? What sort of price will i be looking
at? A normal trailer is no good because my car doesn't have a towbar. I need it to get my indy to the dvla on tuesday for my inspection thingy,
really annoyed that i'm not allowed to drive there!

Why can't you drive it there?
You are allowed to drive to and from an MOT and the SVA, as long as you have insurance.

is this the old chicken and egg 'need a vin number, but must be inspected to get a vin number, and cant insure it until you have a vin
number' situation.
you cant get it insured without a no plate or vin, and at vro ispection, you dont have one....

my story
i had it inspected by a friendly mechanic, who stamped a letter from dvla the one that gave me the chassis no on it, with the dealer stamp like the
one on your mot saying the car had been stamped 2 places 1 chassis 1 plate on car, then it is checked again at the sva. no need to take it to the
vehicle registration.

'no need to take to vehicle registration' varies widely.
some areas even allow you to make up your own 17 lcharachter vin.
northants doesnt allow either.

My original plan was to drive to the centre, stop round the corner and tie a bit of rope to it and pretend we'd towed it, a bit cheeky I know
but it seems daft that I could drive any old heap of junk to the SVA yet I need to trailer it to this inspection.
I had a letter through the other day that stated in very clear terms that all the wheels must be off the floor.
What exactly is this inspection for? My SVA retest is the day before the dvla inspection and I have already been told to make up my own chassis
number, so I don't really know what they're looking for...

Hi pete,
i think all that the dvla guy is looking at when he "inspects " it is that You have stamped the vin to your car!. When they looked at mine
at ipswich last wednesday, it took him all of about 5 seconds. I really dont see why there is any need, asi had already had the piece of paper stamped
by the Mot guy to confirm that the correct vin was on the vechicle.
