Help with IVA process please

So far I have downloaded the IVA manual, found a few things that I didn't know about, and as I understand it
the first step is to obtain a VIN number from the DVLA ?

The only snippet I found on the dot gov website was :- "for VIN apply to K & R , DVLA" whoever that is.

Does anyone have a name or a phone number of the person that deals with issuing VIN's for kit cars please ?
I get the impression that finding the right person is the key to all this.

I also understand that each digit of the 17 total represents something, e.g. first 3 = country where it's made, so
making up your own number is now a no no, maybe ??

To be honest I was expecting a sticky at the top of this section explaining it all ( like download the manual ) but alas
Cloudy's thread "SVA Step by Step" may be a little out of date. ( Well done for posting it in the first place )
If I get through the process without too many probs I'll try to post an up dated thread myself, unless those with far
more knowledge than me would like to.

Cheers in anticipation
Paul G

chassis number

I've heard that you can no longer make up a chassis number yourself and have to ask dvla to allocate one. Is this correct?
And if so does anyone have contact details for whatever part of the dvla I need to get one allocated. Thanks

Try having a read through the forum before posting questions. I was going to link you to a thread about ten down from yours which explains the whole process and has addresses and contact numbers but I'm going to be awkward and let you do it

Well thats not very nice - it wasn't exactly a stupid or obvious question. More to the point this forum is full of conflicting info about this. Also Paul Jepson the self styled dvla expert advertising in kitcar magazine is adamant I can still make one up - I emailed him this month(although I suspect he may be mistaken on this)

But anyway going on the most recent thread I can find here:
http://locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=194256

It looks like this what I'm after:
DONNA KENNET,
MASET
F.D4
DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1ZZ

Can anyone confirm its correct and if I actually need to get one allocated.

Yes, you'll have to get the VIN from the DVLA. A chap on the Haynes forum (Stot, think he's on here as well) did originally have a made up VIN, but in the end had to get a DVLA assigned one.

The address looks right and Donna Kennet rings a bell, but it would be worth double checking. Stot has posted his completed forms (and successfully went through IVA and registration) etc over on the Haynes forum.

Although I didn't address tit to Donna it was her who did mine.

She also sent the v55/5 form and build form v621 or whatever it is when providing the vin.

So when you pass IVA you have all the forms you need ready

Not followed this through, BUT... IF..... You can still do your own VIN, as you are the chassis manufacturer.

THEN... It needs to be a certain length of numbers/letters and also no Letter O or Letter I, as these can be confused with ONE's and ZERO's
I think its 16, 17 or 18 characters long. So no short VIN's.

Basically there is a specified format that the VIN must take.
So make sure you get this right or the DVLA wont accept it as it doesnt fit the format, and more likely wont fit in the boxes on their computer system!

Hi Geoff

To be honest I can't see a reason for making up my own. Because of "O's" I couldn't have "Lotus" or my post code ( CO ) within
the 17 numbers. I'll just be happy with any old number as long as I don't have to wait months for it.

I've got the bug and am frightened that a hold up might lessen my enthusiasm.

Cheers

^^^That's what I was referring to in the thread copied over into this one by rusty nuts.

But, if it will help, here's the completed IVA forms that Stot posted...

Keep at it, Paul!

In my case, I made up my own VIN, then offered it as a suggestion to the Ipswich DVLA office (who no longer exist). It was a "Will this VIN be OK?" type of letter - which they accepted. I guess that this approach may still work.

It's no use David telling me about something that no longer exists, no use at all.
You'll be recommending a petrol to paraffin switch over valve next.

On a more serious note, I keep thinking about those that sell their car as an unfinished project on eBay and describe
them as "95% complete."

I have come to the conclusion that the last 5% takes 50% of the time.

Cheers,
Paul G

Or how to fit a coal-hole for the boiler!

That's a well-known rule in car building...

Unfortunately not. this is exactly what I did, It was stamped into my chassis and I was ready for IVA and they still said no so I had to get a new number on my chassis.

Two things you gave me work really well David.

That voltage reducing circuit for the fuel gauge is brill.

And..

Those clip on battery connectors that you hated are fantastic when doing the wiring.
Do a circuit, connect battery to test, disconnect and move to the next.
So far they have stood up to several hundred disconnections. No sign of wear….. yet.
