Sharp edges. 2 Q's

Hi All.

I need the opinions of the masses regarding my cars impending IVA.

Firstly, the edges arrowed on the wiper arms are sharp, and I mean sharp. They are Mini arms made from stainless steel
but the metal is so thin there's little chance of rounding the edge off. You could shave with these.

Any suggestions ?

Secondly, I have a Momo Race steering wheel and wonder if this is likely to pass. The main spokes are well rounded
but I wonder about the centre surround to the hooter button.

Do we know if they pass ?

Will it pass IVA ?
Will it pass IVA ?

Thanks in anticipation of your help.

A plastic boot off a battery terminal lead may do for the wipers (I seem to remember some wipers had a protective boots fitted). Steering wheel I don't know. Does it have a collapsible boss? Might be easier to fit a standard Sierra one, if possible.

Flexible heat shrink on the wiper arm?
Wheel will fail without a padded centre. Fit a standard one for IVA then swap back.

Wow, most of the wiper arm seems suitable for male grooming!

I know it's not strictly legit, but would it be better to replace them with IVA appropriate ones, before putting the decorative ones back on afterward?

edit: perhaps the heat shrink sleeve would be a better solution.

I will search for a terminal boot.

The column is Vauxhall Nova and has a "chicken wire" section before being bolted to the scuttle bulkhead. After the bulkhead
the shaft between the u/j's is telescopic and has an 11deg offset. Belt and braces, plus a bit of string.

If I were to fit the standard wheel I couldn't get my legs down the footwell.
Any pad fitted to the wheel needs a hole so that the horn can still be operated.

Like the sound of heat shrink. I will search eBay for a suitable size.

If a pedestrian ever slides up my bonnet and cuts themselves on the wipers they'll get far worse from me if they create any dents.

Thanks for the replies.

From IVA manual:

11. Wiper blades and their supports fitted to the windscreen, headlamps and to the rear window must be at least blunted.

The rules don't say anything about it being padded, in fact they explicitly allow metal spokes providing they meet the radius requirements, which those do.
I passed with a momo team which is virtually identical to the above, as have many others.
The momo boss is collapsible and they do check for that.

That's the best news I've had for a while. Cheers mate.

I've also found 20mm clear heat shrink on eBay so I've ordered some for the wiper arms.

I'm now off to cut up some bicycle tubes to make giant rubber bands to cover the lock rings on the coil overs.

Anything contactable with 165mm sphere needs a radius of 2.5mm, I have that same momo wheel in my garage and pretty sure its not compliant, whilst the spokes are 5mm thick, they are not rounded evenly, its eliptical, with a minor radius of about 1.5mm. Whilst a simlar one may of passed, many have failed so padding is the safest route to guarantee a pass. Doesnt have to be the whole thing, just enough to stop the165mm sphere from reaching the spokes.

Just happen to spot a punctured bike inner tube in the rubbish bin when I had one of those light bulb moments.

( sorry for the crap photo; all those reflections etc. )

I had a good look at the spoke rads on my wheel loggyboy and all I can say is if it was my work I'd be proud of it.
You must have a Friday afternoon one.

Indeed, and I've found other uses for various sizes. There's hardly a bike round here that's not missing a tube now.

My car failed the IVA but in the interests of this arising in the future:-

Wipers are exempt from the sharp edges rule. Source, the tester at Norwich IVA Testing Station.

Momo steering wheel passed no problem.

Not so good, hope it was nothing serious.

I thought (from my SVA) that wiper arms were exempt from radius requirements but still had to be "blunted".
I knowI was worried about them before I went. I'd cut my finger fitting mine fitting them, so had run a file over them to take the edge off. As a result they passed.

It was the hinge on mine that worried me ( see pic in post 1 )
so I covered them with cycle inner tube. ( see pic in post 10 )

Dennis the tester at Norwich said I needn't have bothered.

The one that I really can't comprehend is that we can park our cars in a busy town street
and people can walk by a blue hot exhaust.

What would that do to a toddlers leg ?

If you want the proper item, just google "wiper arm boot" - available in many colours!

I don't need the proper item Steve. It's not needed.

The only reason I re-opened the thread was to correct misinformation for the benefit of future builders.

We used to be able to edit posts but that is no longer the case. A great shame imho.

A simple "edit post; wiper arms are exempt" placed at the bottom of my original post is all that would have been needed.
Any future search by a builder would have found the info they needed.

You can still edit posts. Button top right of your post. It does (and always has) disappear after a few days so you can't go back and edit old threads.

Yes, it was the exact spot your arrow points at that I cut myself on. A quick run over it with a fine file was enough to take the sharp edges off and "blunt" it.

Edit... Thinking about it, I used a stone in the Dremel as it was an awkward place to get the file in.
