Buying a old kit car with a V5

Hi all,

We may be purchasing a 1973 citroen based kit car over the weekend. The seller has said the logbook is correct and displays " Ciroen special" as the vehicle details. The car has been on the road in the past and was taken off the road for the usual resto that never got finished when the seller bought it.

If we do buy the car and get it back on the road, is there anything that the DVLA can throw at us to scupper us? I know about the possiblity of back tax if the car was not sorned (if it was taken off the road post sorn) but is there anything else people have come across bring an old 'un back onto the streets?

Thanks,
Shaun

Check if the VIN number on the V5 corresponds to the vehicle - As for tax, this is as a personal liability so would be down to the previous owner up to when it changed hands.

Sigs are uncool.

This happened when I bought my donor, it was off road but not SORN. I correctly SORN'ed it as the new owner, but there was some sort of marker applied that went off to the previous owner. I bet he was glad to receive a tax bill for what is likely to have been more than I paid for the car!

Thanks for the replies,

I have HPI'ed the reg and it is listed as a Ami 8 Club convertable. I am under the impression as it uses the citroen chassis/floorpan the origninal identy remains "intact".

Thanks again,
Shaun

Special / sports / convertible etc..........

Before the advent of SVA / IVA etc I built an F 27 , I used a mk2 Escort for engine/gearbox/axle etc. I had to take this to the local DVLA office in Newcastle for it to be checked re. chasis , engine etc.........because I had used a certain number of components from the Escort I was allowed to keep the registration from that car , however it was then registered as a Sterling Formula 27 sports. In days gone by some people built the kit/conversion etc and then returned the log sheet with the words sports / convertible added. Probably why your search shows Citroen Ami 8 convertible. Worth ringing the DVLA.......with any luck you might get to speak to someone who can help.

I built my 2CV special and re-registered before SVA as Citroen JHS body type convertible, but kept the original reg. The guy at the registry office said I could call it anything I liked. The V5 states'REBUILT- ASSEMBLED FROM PARTS SOME OR ALL OF WHICH WERE NOT NEW'.
Mine is also good on the VOSA MoT register, so you could check old MoT certs too.

One I made earlier
One I made earlier

Car is a one-off built on the 2CV chassis with a few mods, using 'The Book' as inspiration.

I made mine during SVA days, it started off as a reliant kitten and now shows as a reliant kitten sports as it evolved I kept informing them of changes, if I was to sell it then I probally bin the documents.

In the old days kit cars kept herald paperwork with just the front hubs being used and it was never an issue.
