IVA costs and process?
OK, time for some questions...
What is the IVA and registration process these days and what are the costs?
Last time I built a car it was SVA and other than being a bit nervous it wasn't overly expensive or difficult.

Not sure what's changed since last May/June when I did mine, but £450 for the test, and it's supposedly a bit stricter than SVA.
There's also a Reg (or application) Fee of £55 plus the first 6 months RFL to pay (yes 6 months is OK, the full 12 is not required).
Not sure about retest fees, but think I recall seeing £90 mentioned?
You'll expect to have your car on the road in around 2 months after you apply if all goes well. That's based on 4 weeks to get a test date
and 4 weeks for the DVLA to finish messing you about. It can be quicker, but don't count on it!

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure

I did this a couple of years back with the striker.
The IVA is now stricter than the SVA and 3 times the price at £450, indeed the retest is £90.
Best thing to do is download the IVA manual, it's bloody huge, but go through it methodically section by section and it doesn't take too
long.
Noticeable differences (other than the price) is that they pay more attention to the annoying stupid bits - sharp edges, type of nut & bolt used
etc.
To be honest, i found it to be a big elaborate MOT test. I failed on a few bits - brake efficiency, emissions, wasn't happy with a weld on the
steering column, can't remember what else.
Do some searching on here, i think a lot of it comes down to whether you get a good tester - sounds like some of them can be right arses!
I got to the point where i thought i had covered most of the stuff, but wasn't too confident of passing, but thought for the sake of a 90 quid
retest, i'd go and get my failure list otherwise i could have been trying to get it pass-worthy forever in the garage! Much easier to work
through stuff when you know whats wrong!

As above. I did the same with getting a test and for the sake of £90, a fix list. Went back and passed at retest.

Thank you - useful info.
Another question if I may, do I need to purchase the IVA manual or can it just be downloaded?

No you can just download it.
Might need to be a few new ink cartridges or abuse the work printer as it's over 200-300 pages if memory serves....

I just downloaded and left it on my desk top.
It's there when you need it then.
