Proving age of unstamped Zetec
Im sure this has been covered before most likely!
Due to not being able to sufficiently prove the age of my Toyota 4AGE engine for IVA, i have no option but to take it out and go down the Ford
route!
I have been offered a well sorted 1.8 silver top Zetec, however it was a new crate engine when it was done by Raceline and so has no engine number
stamped on it!
Has anyone had this issue before, if so how did you prove how old it should be to get through IVA? Or do i need to purchase another Zetec and swap the
bits over to get a block with a number on it? Then i can get a letter from Ford for that engine number and use the Burton's catalogue and get
through easily enough!
Hate IVA! Will end up with a Q plate anyway and then the emissions dont even come into it!

when ford replaced engines in the past, they put the original number on the 'new' engine, and scrapped the old one.
remember also, the ford engine no. is duplicated in the vin, so there should be an extensive 'paper trail'

Why not send a speculative email to the approvals department at VOSA and ask the question?
Just say you are thinking of buying a crated engine which comes without an engine number and what would be the procedure for getting it registered and
what emissions level it would need to pass. I suspect it would be the post 94 that most Blacktops need to pass.
They have always been very helpful when I asked a question on Fog lights and unleaded fuel insert.

Mark the technical guy there has been very helpful this week. Problem is, its a silver top engine, which you can no longer get as a crate engine, so
would send alarm bells ringing straight away!

Shouldnt make a difference. Nothing against law about buying amd not using an engine. My crate blacktop has been sat in the garage for nearly 7 years.

As stated above^^^^^should make no difference, if you can legally buy a crated engine no matter the age you should have a way of using it and
registering it. Ask the question of them and see what they say, you don't have to say its a Silvertop just a crated engine.

This might be a daft question but if you can't prove the age of the Toyota engine sufficiently then would it not be tested to the latest
emmissions levels - same as an un-numbered crated Ford engine?

well thats my thinking, simple answer will be needs to meet the current emissions. However, like Mark told me, you have very very little chance of
getting a 1987 Toyota engine on carbs through with a cat. Would need a modern fuel injection system too to do it and its not worth the expense! Same
would be with a unstamped zetec engine. So, need to find a block or engine that i can use to sort it out!

In the same situation with my 1.8 silvertop engine.
Removed a cracking low mileage engine from a 1991 escort.
Foolishly, never kept a copy of the escorts v5 or vin tag when I sent the car to the scrap yard.
When I cleaned the engine I noticed that there was no sign of an engine number, nor any evidence of one being stamped.
It does have a bar code on the timing belt cover, kinda wonder if that contains the engine number.
May ask local ford dealer if the engine number can be found via the bar code.
Be a real shame to scrap the engine as I have already shortened the sump, made up all of the mounts etc.
