Iva on monday

So i have got my iva on monday so i have done a once over the car to make sure it’s all done
before monday morning, so i have checked everything and now the reverse motor has packed up
i have only used it to reverse the car back by 1 car length,
i can heard the motor trying to work..

i have changed the battery to a brand new one
i have checked all the electrical connections
i don’t know what else to do..
for me to remove the motor now means i have to take out all the interior panels what are now
glued in (tiger seal)
With the iva monday i tried to postpone yesterday but i would have to pay the full fee again

And options?

I cut out the (Sikaflexed and riveted) rear panel with a Dremel to get to my reverse motor.

It may be the throw gear has jammed against the spur gear. Happened to me twice, I ran the reverse with the rear on stands to "bed" the gear teeth in May be worth backing the gears off a little? If that's the problem.

Go to the test and fail on the reverse motor. Retest is only £90 so cheaper in the long run. Plus you may fail on other things so actually won’t cost any more in the long run.

Makes a lot of sense.

I know it doesn't help, but bonding everything in place and making it inaccessible wasn't really the best forward planning was it?
If you really can't get it done in time then just take the fail, sort it out (and whatever else it may fail on, if at all) and you'll only have the retest to pay.

^^ Beat me to it

As a point of interest. When I had the MK IVA'd in 2013, the examiner only asked me to switch the reverse lamp on, didn't want to see the car reverse This was at Nottingham, things may be different now? Still worth a try though?

well it’s pre preg carbon and i tested it all before i fixed down the panels! and it worked fine
Now i have clues it down it don’t work... i might cut out a section on driver side and have it as a
access panel.. i was just going to go monday, fail and pay the retest
But like you have said it will show if anything else will fail

Shhhh - don't tell anyone about the reverse not working - my friends car had the same problem and it wasn't spotted at test! Failed on something else though

at a guess, you use the chassis as the ground/earth for the reverse/motor
I recommend you explicitly check the battery to chassis ground connection, and ensure that is 'beefy' enough

also try it with the engine running ;-)

The earth from battery to chassis is a 120amp cable, also the reverse motor is watched to chassis
but i think the issue is the motor not the earth! as i have checked all of the electrical conections

Is there any way you can get a set of jump leads onto the motor directly or is access so bad that even this isn't possible?

tbh the normal "fix" for uncooperative starter motors is to just whack them with a hammer, usually free's up any sticky parts

If I were in your situation, I’d probably take a BIG hole saw to the panel adjacent to the motor.

First aim, see what is going on. Second aim - if possible - can you give yourself enough room to get it detached and out. Then make a tidy trim panel to cover the hole. You could always make an even tidier (pre-prep) one later.

Pain.

As above though I wouldn't have Tiger sealed the tunnel panels in.

I would go with the advice above, take it and hope tester doesn't test it moves the car!

You have wired up the reverse light to a switch with turns on the power to the motor, not to the actual button that engages the motor to move the car?

I have got the multi tool to the panel on the driver side and removed the motor, it’s dead
The only reason i used tiger sealed the panels is because i don’t want to use rivers
as it’s not the best finish and the cleanest. i have got some pre preg carbon left over so
i have made the access’s panel into a hinged panel so i can get in for future issues..

i have spoke to mk and sean and neil have been very very helpful and helped me with a
motor for iva

Yes i’m wrapping it my self, 70% done and very happy so far

Some of the items was pathetic like,
front arches not covering tyre, he put level up and there was a cap of no more
than a hair ( i couldn’t see light ) but he said he wants it more over!!

I’ll post the list later

Oh and the reverse failed with a brand new motor! the sprocket on the prop had lose
some teeth
