Tax from SORN in advance

The Suttol has been SORN'd since November and since it will be 3 years old on 1st May and therefore need an MOT
I thought I'd tax it from 1st April. This will give me a month to do the MOT, which will benefit from a blast or two round
the lanes to free off any stickiness in the breaks etc.

WRONG.
Apparently if I tax online then it does it from 1st March and won't let me tax in advance. Same at the local Post Office.

1st of April is a Sunday, and the last time I tried to tax online it doesn't recognise that I don't need an MOT till May 1st.

Grrrrr

IIRC if you tax online during the last 3 days of the current month, it will give you the option to start the tax next month (with the warning to not use the vehicle inbetween).
The post office should do the same, but easter probably messes that up this year.

Pretty sure last time I tried it early from SORN you can't do it until the first of month.

Can only do it early when it's taxed already.

I tried this when I wanted to tax a car to use on the 1st of January and thought I'd got it sorted....but when I checked the confirmation E-mail, it had started the tax from the beginning of December and not January which was four hours away.....I had taken screen shots as I proceeded through the process and at no point did it say it that wasn't going to let me start the tax from when I wanted. I contacted DVLA and they said they'd alter the system to make it more clear.....

Can’t you just tax it online on the 1st April or am I missing something?

Never had an MOT. It's the usual DVLA problem, only able to tax at a Post Office. Not open on Sundays

I've just checked the special notes at the start of a v10 form, it's 2 working days but the post office includes saturday as a working day.
Going by that, you should be ok on thursday to tax at a post office for april.

Its a case of if I tax from 1st April then the 6 months runs to end of September. which is better than end of August.

You can get nice weather in September.

I think, judging by what you all say, I will be leaning on the Post Office door on Saturday 31st.

Heres hoping.

Paul G

p.s.
Whats the betting I won't be able to do the MOT during April to start on May 1st.

Paul - I pay my tax monthly by direct debit, that way it doesn't matter how many months you want it on the road for, 6 , 7 or 8, just sorn whenever you want.
30th I will try and tax mine again from 1st April and report on success

Last November was the first time I'd ever SORN'd anything.

You have a good point there. Hadn't thought of that.

Just tax it on the 3rd of April. It will then run from the 1st and you have just lost 2 day’s use.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure

A few moments ago I taxed my Haynes online from 1st April with ease. Well set up and no difficult questions or dispute over the need for an mot (IVA 3/10/16). Done by monthly direct debit £21. 43 / month, hope for some good weather on Sunday - now must get on with all those jobs I was going to do over winter

I've just done the same for my Westfield. Was given the option to start from 1/3 or 1/4 and am just paying in monthly direct debit. Now we just need some dry weather!

Funny enough it wouldn’t let me tax mine online. Car IVA’d in June 2015, so no mot required yet. But the online system said it needed an mot.

Popped down to post office instead and just taxed from 1st April no problem.

No mention of MOT.
