MOT woes

Me and a friend have just equired a 13 plate mac1 with a 954 fireblade engine..

The car was correctly registered but on the MOT tester is struggling to find out the emission levels it’s supposed to pass on, and on the V5 it states N/A as does the paper work that came with the car....... the tester has now stated that it may not pass unless this has been sussed out.

The previous owner who built it ran it for three years and never put it through an MOT and ended up being off the road for two years.

The tester said that MAC1 might be able to shed a bit of light, but am I right that the company is no more?

Last thing is it imperative to run the engine along side a power commander as it doesn’t currently have one?

Could the car have been SVA'd with a pre 1979 engine and therefore been sight tested only?

I'd expect you'd need to find out the age of the engine and test to these standards now. Hopefully someone will have a definitive answer for you.

Can Honda (or a Honda dealer) not tell you the engine age from the engine number?

When the tester puts the reg into the computer it will tell him the emissions target it needs to pass.

Think he's being an arse, find somewhere more friendly

is it a 13 or a Q plate ?, if it,s a Q then it,s visual only, as coskev says, the computer should say the limits, go to someone who understands such cars

Definitely a 13 plate and not a Q...we bought as it was so cheap.... normally the tester is friendly and helped me a lot with my old Toniq R.

some time ago there was a similar thread,
http://locostbuilders.co.uk/forum/47/viewthread.php?tid=211705
read obfripper's very helpful post (about the fourth one down)
which gives emissions standards codes for the iva mac certificate

Its the revised MoT thats causing the issues

it states:

Kit cars

Kit cars and amateur built vehicles first used on or after 1 August 1998 must have either Single Vehicle Approval (SVA) or Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA).

You must test kit cars or amateur built vehicles to the limits in the vehicle's registration document (V5c). If the V5c doesn't show any limits, you must test it to the limits based on the date the vehicle was first used.

Which means you get lumped in the post 2002 emission standards. (top right)

So the Q plate smoke only no longer applies?

That's what I hoped, but I can't find any reference to Q plates in the revised MOT?

If your car was originally iva'd with the 954 blade engine, it will require a cat emissions test as the engine is 2002/3 and first reg is 2013.
If it had a different engine at iva, then you need to look at your iva mac certificate and find the last digit of the type code.
If this corresponds to a lesser emissions limit, then you need to get the dvla to correct your v5.

As far as I’m aware it was registered with the 954...can’t understand why there wasn’t more info on the emissions.

Big thanks to the guys on here as it’s put me more into the light of things than I had hoped

The V5 should show required emissions in a foot note bottom of the front page
Special notes 3
My second kit on a Q however does not state anywhere emmisions so the Q plate emissions reference applies
I have a copy of the MAC for the age related kit and that does not have emissions recommendation on it.

An option is to ask what similar cars with same engine and age have on them

Just checked on my MAC and as posted earlier there is a class code, the last letter of which indicates emissions. Mine is C which is 3.5% CO/1200ppm HC. It says NA in both the CO and HC boxes though.

If you don't have a copy of the MAC, can you visit the SVA station that tested the car and request a copy? Surely they will have a record of it.

I had the same problem back in June.

The mot computer is linked to the emissions tester, and wouldn't allow a "Visual only" check.

I'm on a 1985 issued "Q" plate, eventually the tester found a way of over-riding the system, and added a comment on the test sheet.
Seemed like the system was using the above flow chart only.
