Registration Info....should I be weary???

I've seen a kawasaki bike engine locost for sale which is road registered, but when checking the DVLA website it's showing as a Scamp ZX9. Fro a little search on google I can see that a scamp was based on a mini. Should I be worried about this if I was to potentially buy it?

It's a ringer!

Pound to a pinch of salt; A cheap, knackered Scamp has had its chassis number and reg transferred to a noneIVAd and unregistered locost and then an engine change has been done on the Scamp v5

yep walk away, scamp is/was a moke-alike,
or buy it without paperwork, and get your own iva on it...

hmm so how do you change the name of a car without raising questions? has this seller just told the DVLA they have put a ZX9 engine in a Scamp and managed to also get them to change the vehicle name at the same time? If so, I feel that the fault entirely lies with the DVLA for not checking this more carefully and insisting on a independent garage verification and confirmed it's even the same vehicle which would have shared no common components.

They also apparently have a "kit car specialist" who obviously is doing a terrific job

One way could be buy a crashed correctly registered scamp, stick the engine and plates on something else. Don't tell the DVLA.

It is impossible to change the name of a vehicle on the V5.
The only way to get a V5 with the correct details is to IVA the car.

The locost ZX9 does not exist as far as DVLA are concerned, the Scamp does. If it’s not a scamp then the V5 needs to show car scrapped and then you have no V5, therefore IVA the Locost

Not quite true, as pre 1999, you could change the log book around pretty well as much as you liked

My Locost was a Mk2 Escort, and the log book said Ford based Kit car in Green and silver

A Friends Pilgrim Cobra (built in 1996/7 and not well built at all !!) is registerd on the V5 as a Rover Cobra, as it was Rover/Jaguar based, i know this, as fact as was a hairs breath away from buying it back in Feb this year, thank god i didnt!!

Back in the pre 1998/99 years, you could build what ever you liked, no matter with what or how, take it for an MOT, and if it passed, that was fine, there were never any questions that i am aware off, except if you tried to register a 3.5 V8 engined car as a 1300 (to reduce road tax) then the Dvla would ask questions

Now, i knew the designer of the scamp, not a car that i would ever contemplate! he is /was based in in West sussex, not far from me, and i am not aware of many Scamps that were registered properly, as a Scamp, 75% were still Mini or the later Metro based on the V5

I would presume the Scamp registered cars on the V5 were made from parts, and again a very easy process back in the 1990's

With the IVA/SVA or what ever its called, the whole process has evolved, and now very difficult to cheat the system

I'm unable to add pictures (haven't attempted it for years, so I've forgotten how to do it) but the Reg is Q429XDA and on the DVLA Vehicle enquiry it states Scamp ZX9, but I guess it's a ringer!

I've sourced another car as well and the owner of this one states that the car was built from a Ginetta donor and was registered as such and has a valid MOT, but again, after a little search, I can't see Ginetta ever making a 7 style kit? i'm obviously showing my lack of knowledge here and I apologise.
He's got this one advertised as a Lotus Westfield 7, but I wouldn't actually feel confident in saying the chassis was a Westfield without someones advice from here!!

Based on the MOT and mileage history, it looks like the identity swap was done in 2011.

Would the VIN be a 1971 Mini?:

Adithorp, it is the same seller, looks like the same registration, but it definitely doesn’t look like that!
This one has a zetec lump in it and looks half complete!

I think you have an answer, if that registration (for a fibreglass saloon car) appeared on a totally different model of a "7"

I've had a look at the new add, I don't think it's a westy

Yes you're absolutely right there! I'm quite surprised by the frequency I'm coming across these types of builds for sale though! The 2 I've mentioned in this thread are hiding the fact that their log books state something completely different to what they are, but I've seen another one on Ebay tonight that actually states the V5 is for a Lotus Elite!!!!
