SVA fail today.

Well the day finally came for someone that knows what they are doing to appraise the car. Fail. However I am pretty chuffed with it as fails go as they are mostly trivial.

1 Emissions ! CO and HC fine but a fraction out on lambda. Went last night to mates MOT station to set up the power commander map but after half an hour his machine freaked so expected to fail. Got Dean Ashton former superbike racer and setup wizz coming tomorrow so that should be sorted.

2 Rear reflectors. Wasn't happy with reflective properties. Bought from MAC1 as SVA OK but I can see his point. New reflectors.

3 No U/L restrictor in MK filler neck. Never thought as always filled from Jerry can in garage so never noticed. Fit restrictor.

4 Incorrect O/S headlamp pattern. Basically the bulb fitted had alignment lug in wrong place so angling the bulb incorrectly. New bulb!

5 Rear brakes binding thus causing brake lights to stay on. M/C sticking (bought new). Remove and free off.

6 Speedometer. Just finished the calibration run when the speedo healer shut down. Calibration was spot on. Check wiring to S/H

7 Self centre on steering. Wanted a bit more attempt to self centre. To be fair after knowing that I would fail on emissions and running out of time I didn't toe the steering out to try this. Toe out and drop tyre pressures.

All in all really happy with that. As long as emissions sorted tomorrow will try for retest for next week. Everything else is pretty simple. Tester was Paul Watson - thoroughly nice guy (tried his best with the emissions) and very fair. All being well should be on the road in a couple of weeks.

Bad luck. But at least there are no major problems.

Good luck with the retest

Bad Luck, I'm sure you'll get it sorted. Looking forward to seeing the car on the road.

is this a requirement now?

Only required if your car has to have a catalyst fitted for the SVA. Mine is a 2003 R1. I believe you are using a Pinto so AFAIK you won't need one.

Richard

Might be an idea to have a lok at the brake pedal before you remove the m/c,i had the same problem before my test and found the problem was the pedal sticking.
I just slackened off the pivot bolt as it was squeezing the plastic bush,in fact i slackened off all 3 pedals a touch.

Cheers for the tip bob but it is definitely the M/C. I have allowed enough tolerance on the brake pedal. The real pain is that I bought the M/C new to try and avoid issues with unreliable used parts. Oh well, not too bad a job.

Yeah not too bad Chris. Sorry I wasn't able to put up the SVA pass post you were looking for when we spoke on Saturday !!
As long as everything goes to plan I would love to be at MK a week on Saturday. The other factor is getting the DVLA inspection done as they will only do it after it is SVA'd at Beverley. Will try and arrange for the same day as SVA retest if I can manage it.

Inspection in Hull is by police V.I.B, took about a week after sva for them to come and see my car, it depends on how busy they are.

I think the problem is with most parts you buy that are declared SVA friendly, the supplier might have got a pass with those bits at their local depot on countless occasions, but other depots may apply a different interpretation. Im expecting some problems at Gosforth with my kit even tho' Mac1 have passed several times at Beverley / Nottingham (???) with the same configuration.

hi richard,

we have had a few problems with the powercommander ourselves, the only injected r1 we have had through was an 03 ( not sure which model no this is ) dont think i saved the map but will ask the customer if he saved it after sva. we have had two faulty power commanders that had to be sent to the hq at bolton for resetting ( might be worth sending it off for a health check just to eliminate this )

also check that the pump is running at the correct pressure ( also had problems with this too ) and if possible heat wrap the catalyst to make sure it gets as hot as posiible

remove all breathers from the engine that go to the airbox as this will help your cause too,

also make sure the air temp sensor is fitted into the airbox and not just in the engine bay as this has a tendancy to keep richening up the mixture due to engine temp rather than air temp ( this was the case on a zx12r recently ) hope this helps

best regards

marc

Better hurry up and get it passed though as I am looking forward (not) to that promised spin in it.
