Crankcase Breathing versus SVA

Is it a requirement to vent crankcase to a catch tank or can I let it go to atmosphere.

Put it in a catch tank - if only for the safety of following motorbikers...

Dont just build it.....make it!

Can you use the standard valve and pipe that would have gone to the maifold to feed the catch tank or does the valve need maifold vacuum to open?

Jeez, you know how to upset a few people!

I have a great repect for bikers, which I know a lot of other motorists do not share. I always move over a bit for them if they want to come past etc

A lot of my friends are bikers, one or two of which have been knocked off in the past by people in cars who werent paying attention.

I too shall be taking my bike test soon. And I hope I never come across you in a car whilst riding you inconsiderate b****r.

In answer to the point of this thread. You dont need a catch tank, only for track days. But fit one anyway.

Answers don't get much more definitive than that!

Venting the PCV into a catch tank is not a SVA requirement. They dont check for engine oil / coolant leaks (i had slight sump leak at mine, just after final retest check my core plug failed and dumped rusty water into his brake rollers - didnt affect recieving the MAC). It is however a requirement for some trackdays and all racing.
I recently posted a thread looking for advice on how to make a catch tank. Might be worth a look, its possible to do for £10 - £15.
Some people have commented that they have replaced the std PCV with an elbow purchased from Burton Power (iirc) to get round the vacuum opening issue.

I hope this helps to answer your question.

Whilst I hardly need to point this out as so many have already, I just can't let this pass.

You are an idiot - you clearly have never ridden a bike or if you have, you have no concept of being a safe road user.

the idea of someone with that sort of attitude being in charge of a high performance car like the one you have scares me and everyone else here.

You should sell your car now and stay on public transport.

And for your information bikers are generally much better car drivers than people who only drive cars.

Sorry for that folks but that stuff really perturbs me

People/chavs/girls/old ladies/rich people/poor people in 1.1 novas etc all have a safety cage around them if they are unfortunate enough to skid on some idiot's spilt oil/diesel/or other substance carelessly (or much much worse deliberately) left on the road.

Bikers are very vulnerable to this kind of thing and generally don't just spin their vehicles, put them back int 1st gear then drive off, they spend time in hospitals or worse.

Suppose he had said why don't we string wire across the road at neck height to decapitate bikers - I don't see much difference between that and what he actually did say.

Does that answer your question?

thanks for your replies. on my comments

"motorbikes safety. . .. humph i'm going to set mine to spill on the road now "

if anyone one here thinks that any of the responsible people that contribute to this side would do a thing like that in real life i am shocked, i am not a member of this side so that i can receive abuse not only on a thread but also on u2u.

to that person you must be the idiot if you think i would deliberately make the road dangerous for any road user not just bikes

bad joke eh ? i bet i could find 1000's of jokes in even poorer taste than that one.

this forum is a useful utility for many car builders who join for information and help not to be called an idiot or further still sent nasty u2u's.

and yes i do own a bike bmw 1100 twin, not a sports bike i know but it hurts just as much when you fall off.

maybe the alterations many of you make after building and sva'ing your car is far more dangerous then my suggestion only of letting my breather vent into the road.

Yes I copied my post to you to make sure you saw it. My U2U said no more or less than the post.

If that was humour it was in very poor taste, also I see you are you now saying that lots of us make very dangerous modifications to our cars????

You have one thing right and that this forum is for helping builders build cars - maybe you should just stick to that

seems there are a few bikers posting that are a little worried about the oil he must be puring over the road but if it was that bad he wouldnt be doing it for long.
out of every bike that iv ever rebuilt i can say no one has ever blaimed anyone for not having there cranckcase breather piped into catch take or airbox, its normaly diesel or cow poo or bad riding or the other persons fault but i have seen a huge amount of bikers that have left the air box drain off becouse they have no idea in what there doing,or bikers that havnt a clue how to set up there scott oilers and drip oil every where

Every bike I've had has leaked oil, I keep meaning to try one of them Oriental ones but I'd rather have a Beezer C15.
