Sorn and scrap

Well after 4 weeks of looking for an XE i put an advert in a local paper and the phone's been going all night.
So far I've been offered 3 whole cars 1 of them a cxe.
What is the procedure for when you've bought one and sorn'd it. I know you renew it each year but what happens when you strip the car and dump the shell etc. do you just keep sorning it until you need the v5 for the age related plate. Will i get an age related plate just by using the engine and some odds and sods.
When the v5 is issued for the seven what do i do with the original one etc etc etc. Anything else you can think of that i need to know?

You can declare it scrapped instead of sorn

If you do that, won't it make it difficult come SVA time, i.e. no current V5 from the donor?

Yup if you scrap it instead of sorning you wont have a V5 and will probably nly be able to get a Q plate - no probs with that though.

Do exactly as you first suggested. Declare it SORN & keep renewing until youve passed SVA & got your MAC & then when you come to register it with DVLA they will take away the V5 & MAC and wipe the donor off their records as scrap or non existant and create a new vehilce - your car in its place. Thats how I did it anyway

Here we have yet another loophole for the law abiding to fall through!

I have had this exact same problem, and yep, the only answer is to break the law! You have to keep sorning a non-existent car! I have a lovely opel manta, an astra GTE 16v and a calibra 16v, which apparently exist somewhere...................

just be careful when you scrap the shell, remove ALL identifying marks and chassis numbers. It is the duty of scrap yards to declare to DVLA details of all cars scrapped so your car could get scrapped without your knowledge..........

Is this such a problem? You'll have the V5 and probably the identity plate as removed from the car as physical proof it did exist. Photos can only help.

Once scrapped, it cannot be resurrected.

Our local scrap yard got the chassis no. of the remains of my youngsters mini grasser, put it into the computer, and up came all the info of the vehicles roadgoing life.

It is imperative, that when scrapping a shell, that you remove ALL chassis and VIN no's. Then it goes through the gate as scrap metal, and not a vehicle. At least that's what my local scrap fella tells me.

Syd.

Cheers for all the replies so far folks. I wondered about the legality of it all and think you've answered that point. Do you get a reminder every year to sorn the vehicle?

I currently have four (none existent) cars declared SORN. I never get reminders but I always renew them every Jan 26th!
I got stung (well it was my Ma but the car was mine!) when I declared a car SORN and waited for the reminder. As it happened, I needn't have declared it at all as it hadn't been taxed since 1989!

Oh balls!

You've got me worried now. I took the plate but left the stamped number on the chassis.
