MOT A lesson learnt!

Thought I'd share this with you all...

I thought I'd break myself in gently for my SVA by getting an MOT done on my tiger.

Trailered it to the garage and it flew through the test no worries. Got one of the new funky computerised certificates.

Next day I was filling in the SVA form and noticed the chassis number on the MOT was only 15 digits long, phoned the garage and told them they'd entered it wrong. They said they can only amend the certificate on the day it was issued and couldnt change it now, refered me to their regional office...

Their answer was, 'no problem sir, send the certificate to us with the V5C and we'll amend it'. Hmmmm, gonna have a problem here 'there isnt a V5C, it isnt registered yet'. Ok, well seeing as it isnt registered yet sir there isnt anything we can do!

Cut a long story short, I have to arrange the loan of another trailer, get it back to the garage to get it re-tested!!

Aaaaargh!

Moral of the story, check the details before leaving the garage!

Why did you need to take it again if you dont actually need an MOT?

If the details are entered onto the computer and you get another test with a different number you will get a letter telling you that you have a dodgy car. It's happened at the bike shop with a few bikes where the frame number has been entered wrongly and the owners are worried they have bought a ringer. Don't MOT it again till you need to and you have a log book to read the number from.

You don't need to trailer it, as long as you are insured you can legally drive it to the MOT.

Also as ReMan says you don't need an MOT before SVA anyway.

Why not just fill in the SVA form with the correct chassis number and then get it SVA'd. Then apply for a reg.

Also, how did the test the emissions then without knowing what emissions levels to test??

I know I dont actually need one, but to save all the arguments when I go to the DVLA I thought for the sake of £40 it would be easier to get one.

Seeing as I've now paid for one, I wouldnt mind the right details on it. The Garage is being 'not very helpful' with a refund, they want to see the car to make sure I am telling the truth before they either do a free retest, or offer a refund...

Cant win either way!

I was under the impression that the only time you can legally drive it unregistered on the road was to an SVA test, not an MOT??

If this is the case then I'm ok!

They asked for the letter from Ford's to confirm the engine build date.

Got the MK tested yesterday - he entered an extra digit on the mileage reading!

Said he couldn't change it at all!

The new system really sucks.

Whilst I was in there complaining, he had 3 other angry customers, one with 300,000 miles on his MOT instead of 30,000. The other 2 had passed but the computer had gone down and he couldnt give them a certificate, and as both MOT testers were logged into the system they could do any more MOT's...

Teething troubles eh!

no, that is typical of government IT projects; cost millions of tax payers money, and if in the rare case they are not panned, they don't work all that well.

tigersupercat - you had the MOT done without reg number so the only identifier on it is the wrong chassis number. Technically that means your car doesnt have MOT. Bare with me here. If you get SVA'd and registered you have 3 years grace before needing MOT. If you get MOT'd at SVA time youhave to have it done every year. Since your certificate doesnt relate to your car in full they may have just thrown you a life line as now you wont get a reminder in 1 years time and might just get the full 3 years - which is nice.

Does the MOT certificate record your name and address? If not and there is no way of finding you (ie when car i sregistered it will record correct number therefore the 15 digit number is untraceable) i would consider your test as a pre-MOT check only and keep quiet.

Did you say they only put 15 digits on it? If so there are actually 2 missing so less chance of matching it up.

I got my van mot'd last week with the new type of certificate I noticed that evening the milage was way wrong they entered 2367 miles instead of 23673. I went into the garage the following day and they issued me with another certificate no problem.
