The official DVLA line is now that the MOT certificate you get is not now a certificate, it is a receipt. The only official and absolute proof of valid MOT is the DVLA database.

I guess that similarly, if you tax it on-line then its valid the moment its on the database, the tax disc is just a receipt (that you probably still have to display) but old bill will check via computer to see if you have tax, if they spot you don't have a valid one on display?

My vote is for you being OK, so long as taxed on-line and waiting for disc in post.

John

it's an offence not to display tax disc even though you have paid for it online and its on its way,,

ditto, plus probably a worse offense to display a disc from another vehicle.

That said, most tax evasion is picked up via camera, so it depends how fast their database updates.

do the tax cameras actually work on seeing the disc, or on NPR?

i'm sure i drove past a couple of tax cameras in the indy, but not once got pulled. my tax disc was on the passenger side of the tunnel, so the camera definitely wouldn't have been able to see it.

if the disc is just a receipt, why do you have to display such a valuable receipt?

curious,
tom

from the old days, when people actually checked! Cameras do indeed work off number plates...

It's not only police you have to worry about re tax disc. Parking attendants can report you, even have you towed for not displaying disc.

That said, I still see people getting away with note in windscreen saying tax disc in post.

My bike broke on the motorway Friday, the recovery lorry had just finished dealing with a police pickup in Surrey.

No tax or insurance on a car, the owner was told to vacate then he gets called in to take the car to the crushing pound, winches up in front of the owner and takes it away.....

Apparantly the owner gets a few days to pay a fine, present valid insurance and tax disc before he can have the car back, if its not sorted within something like 7 days its crushed and he walks home from where he was stopped.

Bit of a problem if your MOT has run out !

It was always my understanding that the police don't prosecute for road tax, it's up to the DVLA to do that. Currently it is up to £1000 plus back duty or £2,500 if being driven while SORN.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

if you should find your car impounded for no tax, and you are unable to get tax due to having no mot, your only option would be to borrow a friends car and clone it into yours to get yourself an MOT, and then retax it sharpish.

Wonder why i was thinking about that today?

ps, i applied for a new disc for my ax online today, cos ive lost my insurance certificate. Pretty convinient if it works well *touch wood*.
