chassis number
no, not the usaual question but .... I sent my own number to dvla for them to check it is accpetable, it is but they say they cannot reserve it so
what happens if I make my chassis plate and in the meantime the number gets allocated? 
Secondly, the number needs to be between 9 and 17 digits (I went for 17) but has another gone for a shorter one, say 9 digits? (fewer digits mean it
will be lighter = faster  )

If someone matches your 17 digit number by coincedence, you can choose my lottery numbers too 
Typically organised as ever aren't they?

not sure what the probablility is but I am guessing that most people would use the kit maker in the name, e.g.
MKINDY2006.... etc. so there may well be a clash.
Maybe I should chose 9 digits and take the letter/number punch sets with me

Just started this process of registration and sva.
Spoke to local office in portsmouth ( bloody skates) and they said i couldn,t use my own and would allocate one. ????
I was also under the impression that i could keep the Reg of the donor vehicle.(No).
Also said the number should be stamped on a plate and riveted to the chassis.???
I was under the impression it was to be stamped direct to the chassis.
Do the rules change as they please or am i totally wrong?
Guidance please.

Yes they change daily, by person and we're all wrong, wrong wrong.
I did'nt speak to anybody anywhere, made my own number up, put it on the SVA application form and then got back the Amature build declaration,
quoting my number, which I presume means it's been accepted.
I was told yesterday by nice SVA man that a single riveted plate is acceptable, no stamping nessesary........

a) varies according to office, some let you choose
b) no, you can get age related plate that is same age a donor plate BUT NOT DONOR REG.
c) SVA manual is a bit vague - need to be permanently fixed - are self tappers permanent??? I don't thnk I've seen the chassis stamped
number mentioned in the manuals but a lot of people do it in "a belt and braces" sort of way.

Not sure but I dont think you can use "I" in the chassis number, Why not do MK"1"NDY

After being at Newark, I know of TWO black V8 L****'s that both have registration plates issued AND they both have the SAME CHASSIS NUMBER 
Stamped into the chassis.
Beware of the Goldfish in the tulip mines. The ONLY defence against them is smoking peanut butter sandwiches.

how in the world coul that be acceptable?
you could easyly drill them out and replace the complete ID of the car??
naahh..
then you just reapply with the car by SVA....
once it is accepted i would easyl stamp it in the chasis between 2 big " * " like the original numbers do look like
on several places 2 (like the big manufactures)

I used the simple, and "almost" foolproof way. Make up your vin number including your engine number as the last batch. ie,
ABCDEFGHJkb32670, seventeen with kb32670 being the engine number. Very unlikely that somebody would have the same engine number. Also SVA man
said vin plate riveted on OK, but "should" also be stamped on the chassis. atb Chippy
