s.v.a. with red top 16v engine

what year is the engine?
If its pre '95 it should be OK.
By my sva guide book, engines from '87 to '95 are put through same emissions.
But then again they (sva gadgies) might have changed the goalposts since it was published.

Pre "95 (June I think) should get through with carbs and no cat. You will need to be able to prove the age of the engine, a letter from Vx would be the best. Emissions test is at idle only CO2 3.5% with Hydrocarbons at 1200, easy to meet if tuned correctly. After 95 must have cat fitted...Why not go with injection? cost difference not that much and then no problems.

Engine was heartlessly ripped from a J plate Cav GSi. No documents available as the rest of the car was broken and disposed of by the owner. Trying to work out the engine number is nearly mission impossible due to corrosion. We have submitted a change of engine number onto the donor vehicle, so we have 1 sierra running a 20XE lump.... and we hope to use the plates from the sierra which would give the kit an 'A' plate. The car is driveable up and down the 'private' road we have - theres no question of ripping off twin 45's and dizzy'd electronic ignition to try and get fuel injection/an ecu on the thing now

Mr G,

If you do go fuel injection can I have first refusal on your (weber 45) inlet manifold, I'll need one for my Xe!

Cheers,

Andrew.

I think you will need to seek advice on this one from Mr. SVA. I'm not sure what emissions test they will put you through if you cannot prove the age of the engine, the last thing you want is being stuck with a SVA emissions test which requires a cat. I'm not sure if changing the engine to the donor car will help as most testers know the engine was not fitted to the donor so is no proof of age. Is it not poss to try and find out what format the engine number should be from a scrapped engine of the same age and see if this helps you to identify your blocks number, then you could restore it....The first two charactors on the Zetec block identify the year/month, maybe Vx are similar. Getting a letter from Vx stops all arguements come test time.

The engine was not put in the donor to try and use as proof of age, more to increase the number of parts used from the donor, i.e engine number on the V5 will be that of the engine in the kit, along with the brakes, steering, uprights, diff, prop, driveshafts etc etc. This has been discussed before on a previous thread

If we don't get to keep the donors plate then we will at least possibly get a normal plate on 1983 'A' from the donor - category D kitcar registration i seem to remember reading.

We think we know what the number should be so we will try and investigate with Vauxhall

I am sure you will get a age related plate without the engine coming out of the donor. The guy who inspected mine said that people have tried to make out a Fireblade lump came out of a Sierra...It's all done on points, if you've used suspension (front uprights), steering, brakes, gearbox and rear axle then you should OK for an age related plate. I've never heard of anyone keeping donor plate recently, I suspect the plate is not available on the database till after the new registration number has been issued, and the donor officially scrapped.

Mine has.

The donor registration was issued to my car at Sheffield VRO. I used all except the Sierra axle and front hubs.

yours, Pete.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
