Received Tax Renewal Today

Received my tax renewal today for the Locost and predictably it says I need an MOT certificate.
A bit annoying really, as at the moment it's only been 5 months since my SVA.

Anybody know the best department to talk to about this?

Even more irritating coming so close to the renewal received for my donor vehicle.

If your registration doc. has year of first registration as 2004/5 or 6, then if you renew your tax on line you won't have to bother with MOT. May be wrong on that but don't think so. atb Ray.

Spoke to DVLA. They say that they are suprised that I was allowed to register the car without an MOT certificate. The implication being that I am driving it illegally.
They transferred me to VOSA who said that as far as they were concerned I didn't need one for 3 years, but in the case of kit cars they had agreed with DVLA one year.
They transferred me back to DVLA who said that any car using donor parts more than 3 years old needed an MOT at registration and annually thereafter on "safety grounds".
I protested on the grounds of all the other kit cars that didn't need an MOT for 3 years and was basically told that they couldn't comment except on the details they have in front of them for my car. I think that translates as "tough".

I don't actually want to tax the car until next year, but I equally don't see why I should shell out yet another £40 for an MOT when no one else has to.

I feel a campaign coming on.

how can the dvla be suprised that you where allowed to register the car without a mot, they registered it.

this is the trouble with the registration process there is one rule at one office and another at a different office.

i had the the same on my car just did the renewal over the phone and not a problem, even been into post office with v5 and when asked for mot i just showed them the v5 and said only registered 18 month ago, oh right must be a mistake.

Hi,
Given the extensive use of number plate recognition by the police these days, I would be inclined to go down to my local police station and ask them to check on the PNC if your vehicle is listed as having/requiring an MOT. Better to know the score before you get pulled over by plod. You might need to show them your V5 and other supporting documentation.

Even though the online DVLA system has provided you with Tax I would expect that it will say in the small print that it is the driver's responsibility to ensure that it also has a valid MOT.

I really wish that DVLA/VOSA et al would get a grip and publish definitive rules on this sort of stuff as it's hard enough to build a car without the subsequent admin burden.

Cheers,
Craig.

Received my renewal notice yesterday, no mention of MOT required, but I thought I would check with the local DVLA office as to when I would need an MOT.

My V5C has the following:
Sect 4B Date of first registration: 12 08 1980
Sect 4B1 Date of first registration in the UK: 16 06 2006

Age related plate, 'W' reg

Registered at Brighton DVLA June this year, started the registration process late 2005.

Well, my contact in the Brighton DVLA who dealt with the registration after SVA says that the DVLA records show year of manufacture as 2005 and therefore no MOT liability until 01.01.2009.

Time will tell!!!

Mine was registered in July 2004 as an age related G reg, the last tax remenwal notice staes that the car will require an MOT from july 2007.
I taxed it in the post office at the start of the year using the alternative form for if it has been sorned and when they asked about the mot I pointed out to them the date of registration and had no problems.
Paul.
