Driving to get engine setup...

Can anyone answer this definitively?

Can I drive my car to a pre-booked appointment at a local garage tomorrow morning to get the engine setup (ready for my SVA on Tuesday).

Now I believe the rules state that you can drive the car to the SVA and a place of your choice to have work carried out to enable the vehichle to pass the SVA, but would that count? Will I get nicked?? Is it really worth the risk???

Any ideas?

Mark

as long as the appointment is for an MOT then yes you can drive to and from the MOT testing station as long as you have insurance (based on your chassis number).

I'll respond to this one as I know Mark is eating right now
Its NOT an MOT test, its a booked appointment with the engine builders to get the emissions legal. The MOT was last week and the main failing point would have been the emissions.

So, is this pre-booked appointment that is needed to get the car through SVA legal to drive to?????

And if it helps, the engine builders workshop is about 7 or 8 miles form his house and its right out in the sticks. So about 2 miles of town driving, then quiet roads with not much traffic about. I know that would not sway things with the boys (and girls) in blue, but it just means there may be less chance of any run in with the law.

It's not legal because it's not a test/inpection that is MANDATORY (ie, required by law)

You are no fun Graeme but it looks like the 4x4 and trailer is the only way to go though.

I admit I was looking for an excuse to drive it and that seemed a reasonable excuse to me! But not legal so

My SVA booklet states:
"... the only circumstances in which you can drive the vehicle before completing the registration and licensing formalities are to and from a pre-arranged SVA and/or MOT test and to and from a garage for remedial work following failure to pass the tests."
Has it failed a MOT test? If so you are OK to drive it. If it hasn't failed you can't.

HI Geoff

Yet another grey area there! I took my car on Thursday to have it run through an MOT to check for any issues they could find. The emissions were the biggest issue.

This wasn't an official MOT and was never recorded as an MOT BTW. They just went through all of the motions to see if they could find anything wrong.

You could always book an MOT appointment for the same time as the tune up and the garage can make a mistake and be overbooked in the MOT bay

I took mine for a few MOTs

If you leave the handbrake slack it fails every time My MOT station only charges for your pass.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

You could always book an MOT at a garage beyond the engine builders location and then fail to turn up for the MOT due to engine problems.

In your eyes it may be a grey area, but in plod's eyes, it'll be lack and white, with a producer and probably a court appearance.

Wouldn't chance it myself!
