Good news for anyone with a slightly dodge number plate.....
from Classics monthly....
begin quote..........
MOT plate rule
The retail motor industry federation (RMIF) has warned that recent changes to MOT rules on vehicle numberplates have been temporarily suspended,
meaning that testers cannot fail a vehicle on certain points until the suspension is lifted.
Stephen coles, from the RMIF's MOT Operations team, said: "The new rules will continue once cleared, but until further noticed MOT testers
must not fail a vehicle on these points. Neither does it mean that these plate features will be legal for use on the road. Instead, testers should
make the vehicle owner aware of the offending features, and point out that they could be stopped by the police if they are spotted".
For more information on what's covered by the changes, go to
www.rmif.co.uk/Article.aspx?id=3859
.... end quote
Yey.
Anyway, you can only be stopped by the police if they're on the streets I haven't seen a police / council camera specifically to find
dodge number plates yet....

Interestingly it doesnt mention Pre 1973 plates that can be black and Silver.
Vehicles constructed before 1.1.1973 may display traditional style “black and white”
plates i.e. white, silver or grey characters on a black plate.
1. The point of a journey is not to arrive.
2. Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

The rules have been suspended for several weeks but incorrect spacing and digits made to look like something else is still a failure

Police clamp down on Dodgy Plates
The Police will still do you for an illegal plate if they want to. Leicester Police at this very moment have a campaign running specifically targeting
people with illegal plates whether they are spaced incorrect, wrong font style, small size, anything goes! There was a media release last week to
alert the public so keep out of Leicestershire if your plates are dodgy!

as far as i under stood the problem was poor interpretation of the rules by the testers. specifically around the the issue of "the plate
background must be 100% reflective" conflicting with the BS marker and the plate manufacturer marker which are usually a ghosted image on the
background and technically one regulation causes a fail due to another regulation.
i had this with a customer of mine and an audi dealership tester on the first day of the rules and had to enter the lons den of VOSA to try and get an
outcome, looks like the suspension is the outcome.
been a bit of a rush job really, bodged it all together in just 5 1/2 years.

We get loads of Porsches from the local dealer to test which have plates that wouldn't pass. All they do is make up new plates and put them in
place with double sided sticky tape over the original plates. Thats without all the hassle we get because of incorrect chassis numbers on them.

It was circulated to the test stations a while ago, they can still fail too small numberplates as the memo is only about the reflective backing and
address markings.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I may be missing something but why use any number plate that isn't legal. It just gives the Police an excuse to stop you and check everything
else on the car.
