Just to check...
If you build a car on a single donor vehicle, taking engine, brakes & gearbox from a pre 95 vehicle, SVA then register it on an age related plate,
there is nothing stopping you 6 months down the line from buying a replacement gearbox, a larger replacement engine and larger disc's and
callipers, without having to fit cats, use the more stringent emissions etc etc etc is there?

Yes once its registered you can do anything you like with it.

hmmm, then i'll find a old pinto engine, but that in for sva, then put in my 1998 2 ltr vauxhall engine, with no cats and no worry of
emissions...
i gather its the same for Q plates (or do they just have the visible smoke test regardless? grr, i can't remember)

His original plan was just to go with Q plates, but then a private plate came up he rather liked, and then a donor was offered foc, seemed daft not to
if there wasn't a problem!

If that is the case why does a kaig (or any such vehicle), using single donor (metro) floorpan, engine/box, suspension and brakes need an SVA?

All you need, to qualify for an age related plate is the donor V5 and two of the following major components from the donor;
Chassis/Body Shell
Axles
Transmission
Steering Assembly
Engine
Suspension (front and back)
These descriptions are rather vague and open to interpretation.
Say for example you use the diff, shafts, brakes, uprights, steering rack, steering column and propshaft from the donor vehicle, you should easily
qualify for an age related plate because you have the following three major components;
Axles
Transmission
Steering Assembly
This leaves you free to fit whatever engine you like. If you fit an engine from a vehicle later than 1st August 1995, you will have to meet the
stringent emissions at SVA but don't let that put you off. Emissions aren't really that difficult to pass.
Saves you all the hassle of having to change the engine after SVA, which is no small task.

The engine he'll be using eventually is a larger variant of the same engine, and a much newer, more powerful version - so will be quite simple
to swap (in the context of the build, anyway!)

because then for the SVA he'd need the cat, have to meet more stringent emissions regs, and it would be questionable as to if he'd get the
age related plate.
