Fitting cat

Just wondering the best way to fit a catalytic converter.
I don't want to weld it on. Is it OK to cut slits in it and then use exhaust paste and clamps? I've read that exhaust paste should not be used pre converter. Does anybody know if this is correct?
Or is there a better way?
